Why,with a few exceptions do the senior citizens go to bed so early,is it conditioning from earlier life ?
I find it much more pleasant to have a late morning miss all the rushing about and end up with a late night, especially doing the shopping.
Most of the answers are as I expected, I myself seldom get to bed befor 4 am and awake about 11am usesualy by the noise of parents returning home after taking children to school.by the way a lot of people would be suprised at the amount of birdsong that can be heard between 4&5 in the morning, especialy in summer

Everyone is different. Many go to bed early after all those years of getting up early for work, getting the children up & off to school, etc. For some, it's hard to get out of the habit of being an early to bed/early to rise person. Some, like me, like to stay up a little later at night, & sleep in the next day. I just started staying up a bit later than usual & it feels good. I worked for many years & now, I deserve to do as I please. Feels good too!

When I worked, I went to bed between 9-9:30 pm, got up at 3:30 a.m. to grab the 4:36- a 2-hr commute to the city. The later you take the train, the more crowded. The 'saving grace' on that train run was that I was an end-to-ender, could fall asleep and not miss my stop. Even before that commute, I was always an early riser-and my energy's high.
Now? When I retired I threw my alarm clock out the window-at home. I'm up at 6, in bed by.....time? what time?

My favorite time of day is early morning. As soon as the sun is up I'm thinking of what I can do- so much I want to do. I often stay up till 12 or 1 but I just can't stay in bed when the morning sun is shining. Especially in the summer because the temperature is so much better in the morning. If I stay up too late I will take a short nap in the afternoon but I wouldn't miss my mornings for anything.

I'm up at 5 and in bed by 9:30 because I am still working full time. Now, if I were retired (which is the status I'm sooo looking forward to) I'd still be up at 5 because I love early morning quiet with my first cup of coffee. But, I'd probably take a nap in the afternoon because I love being up late at night as well.

This senior doesn't go to bed early. I am still employed and work second shift so don't get home until 11PM, then need an hour to wind down. Weekends if I try going to bed a little earlier I end up awake at 4 in the morning.

I am a senior citizen who loves late hours and will get up at 8 in the mornings. Sometimes I may get up at 9.Early mornings are wonderful. They are cool and I can work outside until the day starts to heat up. Hubby is in bed by 10 pm but I stay up until 12 or 1: 00. Poppy

I am 52 and I've always been a night person. My mother says that the first three years of my life I stayed up all night and slept all day. As an adult I have always chosen evening or graveyard shifts. I work in a retirement home and most of the residents do hit the sack early, but some like to stay up till 11 pm or later. And some of them like to walk around all night long, come up and talk, ride the elevator for fun. I will be one of the ones that is up all night riding the elevator.

When I was in college & in my early work yrs, I slept 5 -6 hrs each nite. I didn't need much rest I guess. I'd get to bed 2am and back up at 7 - 8am.
I'm 65 now. I get up approx. 630am w/o alarmclock. I usually get to bed after the 11pm news. I nap a few times during the week but only if I'm really tired. I still keep a busy schedule even though I'm retired.
I sometimes think people retire to bed early & sleep long out of boredom. Even younger people - you probably know some who would sleep their lives away. I did even when I was in my 20s. keep active, keep busy & enjoy your life. Its worth living!

Speaking only from my own experience, I was a late nighter for decades! Aging changed that. I can no longer stay up real late. My mind now differs from my body messages! LOL
I work FT and get up at 5:30 am...but even when not working I still wake up at the time even though I used to sleep in until noon!
Fall asleep around 9 or 10, sometimes earlier depending.

I've noticed that my generation is not the early to bed nor to rise once
they had settled into retirement. There are exceptions to the rule of
course, However, in my parents and grandparents' generations, they
were more conditioned to going to bed early and rose early. Men in
my fathers day, tended to ride the bus to work. There weren't many
parking garages downtown then. So it was cheaper and more practical
for fathers to take the bus to work every day of the work week. And
they came home the same way after 5:00. Today, 5:00 isn't the
norm for everyone leaving work. On any work day, you will see the
freeway traffic already jamming up around 3:30 in the afternoon to
get home.
Most of my friends don't go to bed early. But they tend to get up
early. We all seem to not need as much sleep as we did when
younger. I have only one friend, who drops off in front of the TV set
by 9:00 every evening. But her body clock wakes her by 6:00 AM.
I tend to go to bed around 1:00 AM and I will sleep until 8:00 unless
I wake up with some pain earlier. And when I do, then I generally
stay up and eat an early breakfast.
I think it is an individual thing, on what time we go to bed,
or when we rise. But I remember my grandparents, when they were
either farmers, or owned a gas station. It was dark when they got
up. And dark when they started to work. And they were more than
ready for sleep after the cows were brought in and milked and fed.
And a gas station closed early in those days, and they came
home a bit later than on the farm.
My dad was on time to catch his bus home. Dinner was timed to
be n the table by 6:00 PM and I had to have any homework done
and be in bed by 8:00. And I never knew when my parents went to
bed. But it wasn't much later. I don't believe that people really retired
in my grandparents day. They were all such hard workers before
retirement, that they needed to keep busy in the years that followed.
My mom and dad stayed up later after retirement. Dad would often
go to sleep in front of his bedroom TV. And mom would go to bed
earlier. But she was the first up in the morning to make breakfast.
She liked to get up when it was quiet and have her first cup of coffee.
That was a long time habit she cllung to. And dad had his own also.
