When did "fewer" become "less"?

More lost language...instead of "fewer apples and less applesauce", people always seem to say "less apples and less applesauce". It has become a plague. Anybody miss "fewer" the way I do?

    Yes I miss "fewer" because it's correct and sounds nicer! So many people are making the same mistake. I think it started a while ago and it is a shame, isn't it?
