How much Secret Service protection do third-party presidential candidates get ?

Like the Libertarian and Greens. Obvioulsy not as much as Obama, Kerry and McCain got , but must have got something, as killing them could upset election slightly

it's depends on the amount of weight they carry in the polls. I'm not sure, but I think the "magic number" is around 30%. In short they have to be considered a serious candidate. Once that base line is established then they get the same as any other candidate.

Example: Perot had an SS detail; but Ron Paul did not. (Of course, Ross already had a private security detail prior to reaching that standard.) Jesse Jackson even had an SS detail back in the 80's. Al Sharpton, on the other hand, perhaps a secret "hair stylist."

They have to get a certain amount of polling percentages before they get any. Ross Perot had SS protectiion. Not sure about Nader.

They receive the same protection.Only you just don't hear about it as much.

The media never really sheds any light on the independents.

Remember it's all about the two headed monster.

  • I don't know. How many of them have been assassinated? That might be a huge clue. . .

    I doubt they get any.
