I'll give the bible answer. It was shed for our sins, and it cleanses us of our sins as we repent. What do you believe?

Update:

Like others have said, there can be no remission of sin without the shedding of innocent blood. Christ was completely innocent in that He never sinned. Before Christ, they would sacrifice an animal that had no blemishes (without spots or any type of fault). The animal sacrifice had to be perfect. Christ NOT sinning was a representation of a lamb without spot or blemish. He was the Perfect, Ultimate Sacrifice. He shed his blood for the remission of our sins. That was the purpose of His blood. It cleanses us from our sins. It gives us everlasting life and forgiveness.

Jews had to sacrifice animals, that were with out blemish and other specifications to become cleansed. The idea was that they transferred their sins unto the animal, which covered their sins for a while. Without this, you cant have a relationship with God. God abhors sin and wont be around it. that means no provisions, no protection or blessings.

That is why Jesus was called the "Lamb of God"

he was sinless and a deity in the flesh. He showed that the laws did not produce sinless men, therefore works did not save. Salvation can only be from God's grace and trust in his son.

By being sacrificed, Jesus fulfilled the legalism of the Laws. And all who believe receive eternal life, a fellowship with God, (he can dwell inside us now when invited), and authority over the enemy.

In the Old Testament (after Adam’s original sin), God accepted the death of an animal as a substitute for the sinner. The animal’s shed blood was proof that that one life had to be given for another. Life is precious and God places great value on each one of His created beings. This agreement demonstrated that, while blood symbolized death, it also showed that a life was spared. However, this was a temporary covenant. This blood needed to be repeated daily and yearly.

God would later send His only Son providing a new covenant, or New Testament through Jesus Christ. Jesus would die in the place of all sinners. His sacrifice fulfilled completely what the Old Testament covenant meant to. His blood would remove the sins of the world for all who put their faith in Him. This sacrifice would never have to be repeated; it is an eternal covenant.

1 Peter 1:18-19, “For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. He paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.”

It cleanses us of all unrighteousness. Life is in the blood. Jesus shed His so that we could have life--eternal life. There is power in the blood of the Lamb. It washes away our sins. It frees us from the burden of sin. It gives us victory over sin and Satan.

History is written in blood. Blood must be shed for good to come out of the worst times. To deliver the people from a war torn country to save the lives of others blood must be shed.

The blood of Jesus was shed for us on the tree at Calvary and by His stripes we were healed and sins forgiven. We are set free for all time and our names are written in the Lambs book of Life.

We can plead the blood of Jesus against the powers of darkness. It still sets the captives free. We can cover our minds in the blood of Jesus.

It makes demons cringe and flee.

The precious blood of Jesus has been written into worship and praise songs for 100's of years.

Christ Shed His Blood for the Eternal Salvation for all our souls.

He Is the Saviour of the entire world.

In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. (Heb9:22).

Without sacrifice then no penalty was paid.
