Has anyone ever heard of giving an egg as a symbol of friendship?

My company has a couple visitors from South Africa, who only speak Afrikaans. They gave eggs to me and a couple other ladies in the office, explaining it was a symbol of friendship. We weren't allowed to set the egg down for a couple minutes. Can anyone explain this custom to me? We were really confused.

Update:

Those guys could speak perfect English. It was all a joke. Hilarious, looking back on it, but rather embarrassing at the time. Haha.

Lol... I'm an Afrikaans speaking South African and all I can think is that these guys are playing a trick on you. According to me there is no such custom here.... Eggs as a symbol of friendship? I think not... Anyways, this makes just as much sense to us than it makes sense to you. Personally, I would've set the egg down...

If you find out what the meaning of this was... please email me. lol.

Oh.... as a rule to everyone, the chances that someone who speaks Afrikaans doesn't understand English is about 2%. Most of us can speak the language fluently enough for everyone to understand us.

HaHa.. I thought it could be a joke to see how long you will keep the egg..... :-).... I'll remember this one... lol.
