If you let it sit without starting for several weeks then it's most likely a fouled carb. Get a spray can of starting fluid and see if it will start and run while you spray it into the intake. If it will then the carb is varnished up from sitting and needs rebuilding.

Spark
Do this, pull the plug and put it into a screw-driver and hold it about 1/4 of and inch from the motor and then crank. Is there spark? If not the points are stuck closed from sitting.
Does it crank but sputter? If so the carb must be rebuilt and onan does not sell any parts for the carb. Thy say to replace it. If it has been sitting and not run for 3 months or more.
Hint: put stabal in the gas to keep from gumming up the carb. Follow directions on the lable. Put it in the gas, and it will not crap out the carb.

Depending on the year of it, most Onan engines have points and condensors. They are in a box on the top of the engine, driven by a fiber rod that wears down. Watch for oil inside the box also, a sign the seal is gone out where the rod moves up and down. good luck

I have a similar generator and don't think it has a starter, useds the generator windings to start the motor. the click could be a weak battery or also a solenoid not making good contact. Hope the mice did not feast on any of your wiring, scary! FOURFROMMOORE

Could be that you have bad compression. Have you done a compression check? I don't know how big/small or how old it is.
