Need help with colouring my hair!?

When I was a baby I had ginger hair, by the time I was two it had turned to a lovely golden blonde. As a teenager it went progressively darker and now, at 48, I have mid brown hair. The problem is that I have quite a few grey hairs that I need to cover up so I want to colour my hair a medium brown shade. I've found the colour that I want, the problem is that it looks great for the first few days but as soon as the sun comes out it turns a gingery-brown colour and I hate it! I've tried using different brands, Loreal etc, but it just doesn't make any difference - a couple of days of sunshine and I'm gingery again. This doesn't happen to my natural hair, it only happens when I've coloured it. Is it because I was red haired as a child and the pigmentation of my hair is odd, even though there's been no sign of the red for over 45 years? Any help would be appreciated.

Update:

Thanks for the tips, I'll try the ash brown as suggested. I did have it done at the hairdresser's in Feb but the same thing happened again! And it cost me £93 to have a colour, cut and blow!

Yes, try ash colors. Golden colors will bring out the blonde and red while dyeing your hair brown so it will still become gingery and light.

The ash has the brown dye but has no golden or red pigments so it should be your natural highlights peeking through the brown color.

    Medium Ash Brown?

Yes, it's because the underlying pigmentation can still come through in the sunlight. You need to cover with an ash brown (any colour with 'ash' in the title would be fine) to tone the red tones down. Dying over an ash brown with a medium warm brown colour should be fine but ash always works.

SUnlight is bad for your hair. Go to a salon and have it professionally done. It's worth the money...trust me.

But I understand if you can't. I used to use Revlon haircolor. When in the sun, wear a hat. Or get some color glaze between colorings. Make sure the dye is for grey hair coverage. Got a few myself and I'm 31. Might be pretty is you get some sort of highlights in your natural hair. Try it out. Good Luck.

If your color is fading out that fast, you are probably using a semi permanent color or demi permanent color. You can try what is called Permanent color, which wont fade but will grow out with your hair, so every 4-8 weeks youd just have to get a retouch. I reccommend going to a salon and having it done professional rather than buying store bought color. Also, I would shy away from completely black, once it permanent black its very hard to get any other color, including brown. Hope this helps!

I think blonde hair will be sexiest, but brown hair can become really sexy too. Black hair will be never sexy. It's just really boring and boring and flatters few constitution. Blonde hair looks best with glowing blue eyes.

We like blonde hair or red yet it depends on what the person looks like.
