Are in-vitro babies more prone to medical problems?

I've had several friends who had to use in-vitro fertilization (IVF) to have their babies. All had some serious early medical problems with some of the babies, including premature birth.

So I was wondering what the statistics are for IVF. Are there more medical problems with IVF babies than normally conceived babies?

IVF causes no health problems in children. Obviously, premature birth can happen with anyone especially with mulitples. A lot of older women have to resort to IVF and the age can play into it, (many older women have children with downs syndrome and things like that). I'm suprised to hear that ALL of your friends children have medical problems. I know many women who have been through it (6) and none of their children have any problems, including my own. Unless you are counting premature birth as a serious medical problem, which it's not always. My boys were born at 36 weeks and came home with me. You might be able to find some stats at the cdc or something but I'm sure it will tell you there's no higher chance of having problems given everything is equal (full term babies, ect)

So far as I'm aware, the only issue with IVF is that there is an increased rate of multiple births -- and multiples are are increased risk for prematurity and other related health problems.

Also, older women often resort to IVF, and older mothers are more likely to have health problems themselves, or have eggs with genetic defects.

An invitro baby has no more chance of having health problems than a naturally conceived child unless they are one of many babies (triplets, quads, etc) because they will not carry to term and that causes them some risk of health problems. If a woman is pregnant with one child or even twins via in vitro then her child has no more of a risk of having health problems than any normal couple would face.
