Don't we already have "death panels"?

There are already death panels run by every private insurance company already. These are the panels that deny care when it gets to expensive. They throw people off insurance when they need it most and sell people insurance that has a high deductible with very inadequate coverage. And don't forget that group of people who are already sick with a chronic disease and cannot buy insurance anywhere at a reasonable price.

People die every day because of the decisions made by "death panels" run by private insurance companies. If you oppose death panels, you should be screaming for health reform not against.

Update:

I personally know 2 people who dies because insurance companies- private capitalist American insurance companies- refused to do tests and denied treatment until it was too late. Those who think their private insurance companies are so great are lucky because they must not have had a serious illness.

Update 2:

I don't think some of you read my entire question????

    Nice comment Madart.

When Imitrex first came on the market, my wife's doctor found that it was the only medication which could control her migraines. The insurance company decided that 6 pills a month was a 30 day supply. This despite the fact that the medicine may be taken up to 4 times daily. When I spoke to the insurance company pharmacist to complain, her reply was that if my wife needed more than 6 pills a month, she should switch to a different medication. When I mentioned that no other medication worked, she basically said sorry that's all they would agree to pay for. The pills cost them $5 each, we paid through our policy $4 for a month's supply. I am sure if they were 5¢ each, they would have had no problem providing the proper medication in the amounts the doctored ordered. So the insurance companies already make the decisions about medication, treatment etc. not in what is best for the patient, but what is best for the stockholders of the company. There's nothing wrong with the government providing some competition.

  • If the Congress would pass a resolution when they get back into DC allowing the Insurance companies to compete nation wide like most other companies do then rates would drop this year. Just like Geico Insurance Co, and Progressive Auto Insurance. Walmart competes with Taget. Competition is the American way, unless Congress gets involved.

Here is Palin's take on it:

The left love to make fun of her, but here is what she read and how she got there.

    Read and learn!

    The bill is here:

    Sara Palin

I have read the bill and have included the DEATH PANEL pages:

Page 30: A Government committee will decide what treatments & benefits you get. This would be the “Death Panel” and, unlike an insurer, there will be no appeals process.

Page 272: Cancer patient treatment will be on a case by case depending on cost of treatment.

Page 335: Government mandates establishment of outcome-based measures.

Page 354: Government will restrict enrollment of SPECIAL NEEDS individuals. Trig and other children with Down Syndrome will be excluded or accepted according a panel (Death Panel).

Page 425: Advance Care Planning: Counseling for Senior Citizens, assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Page 425: Government provides approved list of end-of-life resources, guiding you in death.

Page 429: Advance Care Planning Consult will be used to dictate treatment as patient’s health deteriorates. This can include an ORDER for end-of-life plans from the Government

Yes in the State of Oregon,Massachusetts and a few other States that have a state government type health care system already in place. The government there decides on what is covered and what is not.

  • 1 decade ago

Yes, people are denied treatments by some companies. BUT...they can choose another company over that one who will do it. Some states do not allow pre-existing conditions to influence the decision by law. With a government run option, and legislation that says no NEW policies can be written once it takes effect, the government decision was your ONE SHOT. And let's get it straight...this bill has NOTHING to do with reform.

Yes. Also the death penalty rules came from a Death Panel, right?!!

We certainly do need reform, but that doesn't mean we need THIS reform!

When my insurance denies coverage of a particular test, at least I know I chose that insurance.

I can choose to stay with my health insurance company i I want. I can appeal their decisions, and I usually win. Have you ever tried to battle the government? You can't.

The so called "Death Panels" in the House bill are also optional even for people that would be in the Public Option Plan.

    Fox News even said it.
