How well do you have to be a pianist to play a concerto?
I've been playing piano for 10 years now and I'm really considering going forward with piano from everyday hobby that consumes 40-1 hour of my time to more. I'd like to start playing concerti, but when people first start playing them...? My teacher is a teacher that I absolutely adore, but she hates arrogance (especially among her students) and here I am, curious on how well are pianists who play concerti. Approximately how well/how long when you first played (serious) concerti? Any ABRSM or levels in music attained? Of course, I know it depends on the concerti...how about, Mozart's last 8 concerti from K.466-K.595 and the like? Thanks!

I am really surprised you have not played a concerto. They are usually introduced is simplified versions by the 4th or 5th year and moving on into single movement then complete concertos soon after.

Have you ever actually PERFORMED a Classical Piece.. say a PIANO WITH ORCHESTRA piece... IN PUBLIC? There is a HUGE difference between dreaming about playing on stage with a full orchestra pushing you AND ACTUALLY DOING IT.
I started playing piano when I was 6 years old because my mother was a piano teacher. I gave my first concert at 8 and was playing professionally in churches on sunday mornings and at the local skating rink on Saturday nights and sunday matinees when I was 12 and 13..
At one time I thought about becoming a concert pianist and I really thought I was hot stuff... then I went for an audition and saw 8 year old kids who were playing stuff that I couldn't hack on my best day... THAT was when I decided I didn't have the talent to be a CONCERT PIANIST.. nor did I have any desire to put in 100 hours a week in practice... so I went the commercial route and have never looked back.
