Republicans: why no GOP health care reform effort?
Forget Obamas plan for a second. The part I find strange about the health care debate is this: As a group, the Republican party is far and away older than the Democratic party (see link below for exit polls from 2008 election). This means that as a group Republicans have a greater need for care and are therefore the ones getting totally screwed under the present system. They had full control of congress for 6 of 8 years under Bush and yet: no GOP effort to reform health care! I get that the GOP doesn't like Obama's plan, but why no effort of their own? What gives?

Uh, the oldest Americans, including the one's screaming that they don't want a government-run health care program, are IN a government-run health care program -- just thought I'd mention it.
Yes, I've been in "whether to laugh or cry" mode, watching Congressional Republicans saying how deeply interested they are in reforming health care.
There WAS a "reform" of Medicare during the Bush years -- it made it vastly more expensive, and hurt beneficiaries.
BTW, there's no such thing as Obama's plan. Congress is producing a bunch of drafts of plans, some version of which will be sent for Obama's signature.

Well Nixon tried to get a national health insurance program back in 1972, he was blocked by a democratic majority congress.
A democratic majority congress blocked Hillary Care in 1993, when they refused to send any bills out of committee.
Democrats in the House, All voted against starting the SCHIP State Children's health insurance program in 1998.
Democrats voted against giving senior citizens prescriptionn drug coverage in 2003
In fact, every major reform of health care since 1966, was done by republicans and in each case, democrats tried to block the reform.
You have a president who holds a town hall meeting, to speak against misinformation about health care reform.
Then he flat out lies and speaks about $50,000 dollar amputations, when they only cost $2,000 dollars.
There are specific problems with health care that need to be fixed, but no one is trying to fix just the problems.
1. Uninsured people -- put them on medicare
2. Pre existiung conditions - pass a law saying insurance companies cannot bar anyone for pre existing conditions.
3. Cost - pass a law saying anyone can purchase any health insurance plan currently offered by any insurance company, at the same rate the Insurance company is charging for that plan now.
IE: You can buy into the same plan large companies like Dell offer, or into the Blue Cross plans offered to State Government employees at the same price.
B, Cost - for those who cannot afford insurance, either put them on medicare or subsadise thier health insurance purchase.
Bingo, that solves the majopr issues without completely over hauling the entire system.
As mush as they say, we are not trying to get a single payer sustem, they are indeed trying.
They might not try and pass it in this bill, but they are making sure that they lay the ground work for such a system.

George Bush did propose health care reform while he was President. The mantle was never taken up by the Congress. A Democratically controlled Congress I might add. Some people have very short memories.

Maybe you aren't getting all the news on CBS, NBC, or CNN. The New York Times and the Huffington Post are also not telling both sides of the story.
Check out FOX News for both sides of the story. You will be amazed to find the stories never talked about on Obama media! Must just be an error of omission? Ya think?

They are on the corporate side of things. That is what the town hall noise is all about. There is no plan in place because they like it as is. Corporate America has put the talking heads in high gear to get people convinced that the boogie man Obama will give them a death sentence and is scaring the hell out of them. There is no shame with the corporations when it comes to profits at the expense of the uninformed and misguided. Those on medications and long term care are the most vulnerable.

Simply because we are Capitalists. Companies, ie banks and GM, should be allowed to fail. Through failure, you will find success, if you don't want to keep failing.
There should not be a "health care plan" period. We should not be a welfare state, either. But, because we are, some think as though we should take it even farther from the Constitution, than we already have gone.
The better question is, why aren't the politicians going to use the same program that the POTUS is pushing for?
Answer: They know what crap it is.

Actually the last time Medicaid, prescription medication coverage, and patients' legal rights to coverage were updated was during Bush's first term. All three narrowly passed despite virtually every Democrat voting against those reforms. The last health care initiative by Bush was a health insurance credit and subsidy system to protect the uninsured, but that proposal was killed by the Democratic Congress in 2007.

The problem is not with the health care system as much as it is with the TORT system. Limit malpractice awards and legal intevention in medical practice and you will see costs drop dramatically. In the southern border states, illegal aliens cost the hospitals an astronomical sum annually, prosecute the employers of illlegal aliens and this cost will decrease also. More preventive medicine needs to be practiced in the US and financial incentives should be created to promote this. Otherwise, we have a pretty good medical system which is about 20 years ahead of everyone else.
