You might get lucky and find some late summer warmness, but most likely, it's going to be on the cold side to cold and windy. No snow yet, but it does tend to get pretty chilly at night.

You want to pack short sleeve shirts in case you luck out, but also make sure you pack sweatshirts/sweaters and a medium jacket. If you have one with a zip out liner, that would be perfect.

    Long pants (jeans) should do.

Tom Skilling at WGN has said that this fall/winter may be a bit warmer than usual due to an El Nino effect. Typically when Chicago has had cool springs/early summers, it warms up in August and September. We just had 3 straight 90 degree days to show for it!

Tom Skilling has an "Ask Tom" portion of his blog that you might ask him directly... but he's had some posts about it:

This doesn't discuss October directly... but it seems logical that it won't be too cold! October days are usually pretty pleasant (highs in the 50's and 60's with some 70's) but the nights can dip down to the low 50's or 40's. It's very rare, but it can even snow in October (usually melts right away).

I remember plenty of Halloweens where it was warm and plenty where it was cold... that's about 3 weeks later than you will be here, so it probably will be warmer but I would definitely bring at least a light jacket and long pants, as well as some lighter fall clothes too.

Typical temperatures on a typical day in late October are between about 40 degrees (low) and 60 degrees (high). These can vary greatly, and you may occasionally see some frost at this time of year Other times, you may need no coat nor jacket. A "mid-range" jacket is best, but again, the weather varies. A hat might be useful, a scarf is optional. You can also expect occasional rain - but that can happen any time during non-freezing seasons.

Your guess is as good as ours. The weather has been extremely unusual this year. We had May weather in July so maybe we will have August weather in October.

Beginning of October is usually warm during the day (short sleeve and jeans) and cool at night (jackets).

Check the weather before you leave so you know what to pack.

ive lived in chicago all my life! Early October is when it begins to get nippy but its really not so bad, so bring a light jacket and maybe a few long sleeve shirts but i doubt itll be very cold. I would wear more jeans than shorts though! But its not going to be really chilly until mid october. Have fun and be sure to go to Navy Pier!

Figure on 60's to about 70 during the day, and about 45 or so at night.

really nice, beautiful fall weather. plan to wear a heavy sweater or light jacket and enjoy a crisp cool breeze.

For this area it is unpredictable. I've seen it hot and snowy. To be safe bring pants and a jacket.
