Can you have an occasional glass of wine when pregnant?

I was told by a friend you can have one glass a week. Is this true?

It really depends on who you ask and the level of risk you are comfortable with. Some docs (and some countries) will say that light drinking is fine. Others will insist on complete abstinance.

There is no medical evidence of harm to the baby from a single, occassional drink during pregnancy. (With 'occassional 'being defined, depending on the source, as once a week, a couple of times a week, or a couple of times during the pregnancy.) It certainly will NOT cause FAS, or even FAE. (Both of which are clearly caused by regular HEAVY or moderate (usually defined as 2-4 drinks/day) use.)

However, sometimes babies are born with any of a number of problems, both major and minor. We don't know why they happen. So if your baby IS born with a problem, you'll have to think ahead. Will you feel guilty and spend the rest of your life wondering if that glass of wine caused it? If so, skip the wine, or stick to the VERY occassional drink. (New Years, your birthday ...)

EDIT: BTW, alcohol is alcohol. Once it's in your body, the alcohol from a glass of wine is EXACTLY the same as the alcohol in a beer, a mixed drink or a glass of neat spirits. (The difference is the amount of alcohol .. which is why a 'standard' drink of spirits is much smaller than a 'standard' drink of beer or wine.) So if you prefer to drink a Cosmo or a Guiness ... that's ok too.

I have herd this many times and believe it to be true. Ill look online for a site that has research on it. But once here and there wont hurt a thing. Wine can actually have positives for you (not in pregnant state) medically, atleast so I have read/herd. I hate the taste of alcohol myself but to each their own =D

As stated above about fetal alcohol syndrom, thats a bit drastic. Studies have shown that a few glasses a WEEK are even ok, and that a glass on occassion is perfectly safe.

"The research found that not only can pregnant women safely drink a glass or two of wine per week, but that their children performed better three years after birth when compared to children of women who did not drink at all," Wine Spectator reported when it first covered the topic back in October 2008 when the study came out.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Wine and hard liquer/beer etc are in the same yet different leagues. The reason it is recamended to stay completely away from alcohol is because a safe level of alcohol intake during pregnancy/the safe levels of episodic drinking have not been clearly defined.

I took exerps from the two articales below, one towards each side. There is no clear winning side, its a matter of what you feel comfortable with and within safe limits. A half glass after the first trimester, at most once a month, would most likely be ok. But there is information leaning both ways.

i does no longer do it until eventually the 0.33 trimester, yet I had a chum for dinner whilst she replace into in her ninth month and she or he had a tumbler with dinner (she's an OBGYN!) so i'm guessing she had achieved the prevalent source learn LOL in my view, i've got had an inch of wine interior the backside of a tumbler if there replace right into a impressive bottle open and somebody mentioned it tasted extremely good with a definite cheese or something like that. i'm no longer a heavy drinker, so this is purely for the style (and to experience extra general, in spite of everything, no blue cheese, no Brie or Feta, no sushi, gotta have something in some circumstances.) My sister did no longer drink until eventually 2 weeks earlier her due date, which replace into at yuletide. She hated the style of it, which you will locate this is afected too.

I've read that an occasional glass is okay and won't hurt the baby, however you have to remember your baby is getting everything you take in. (If you are anything like me) one glass and I'm tipsy, so if you are tipsy so is your baby. You're really better off staying away from it completely.

I wouldn't say a week. I know an occasional glass for holidays like Thanksgiving, Anniversaries, Christmas, ect is ok. No beer, liquor. Just red wine.

My midwife told me there has been no proper studies done to prove that one glass of wine can harm your baby. But they still dont advise it just in case.

Your body also knows if it doesnt like something, it's as if something clicks in your brain and you become more careful but not realising it.

    You just know =)

I've heard that you can have one glass, or one beer a week occasionally, but to me it's not worth the risk at all.

Ask your doctor...mine told me that new studies are showing that no amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy, but I have friends whose doctors have differing opinions. I didn't drink before I got pregnant, so it hasn't been an issue for me.

  • They say the occasional glass of wine is harmless...I havent done it but supposedly its ok.
