Protester brings rifle to Obama appearance in Arizona -- has the world gone crazy?
Here's the link (hope I post it correctly!)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090817/ap_on_re_us/us...
In essence the Associate Press story says a dozen or so protesters openly carried weapons, including an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, to a convention center in Phoenix, Arizona, where President Obama was finishing the last of a four-day tour of the western states. (They were demonstrating their "right to bear arms".)
My question is: whatever your politics & feelings about the second amendment, how do you feel about civilians walking around openly with deadly weapons -- and especially in the vicinity of the U.S. President (or any other public official)?

Hey, I think it's funny that we both posted the same question. In case there are people reading your question in lieu of mine I have to post my opinion because I didn't care for the 2 answers I saw so far.
Yes, they were entitled to carry these weapons as far as the law is concerned. However, it seems like a very immature way to show off your rights. I doubt the man carrying the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle carries it with him everywhere, so why now? What is wrong with simple signs and writing letters to congress?
I just don't understand how these people think that they are going to change anti-gun people's minds if they scare and unsettle them by bringing weapons to a presidential event. Just because some people feel comfortable around guns, doesn't mean everyone does.
I grew up around guns. My father is a hunter. My hubby that I met in high schools father carries guns as a part of his armed security job. But still. I am not comfortable with anyone bringing guns to a protest when there are emotions running so high and people are riled up and strung out to begin with.
In my opinion it was tasteless, immature, wrong and will prove no points in their gun rights opinions. Period.
*edit*
Ibredd- that makes no sense at all. There are many people in NY (or any other state, it sounds really dumb to assume NY is the place where *all* the crime is at) who carry guns regardless of the law...so how do carrying legally and illegally tie into crime? People will still carry them regardless.

If you spent some time in Phoenix, you would understand. I am much more comfortable in the presence of people carrying holstered weapons. 1. If some crazy comes along you know at least one person there can deal with it. 2. If they are CARRYING their weapon in the fasion that conforms with the law, they will probably USE it in a fasion conforming with the law.
If you cant stomach the sight of an armed citizen making a public statement of his views on a certain political issue, maybe you would be better suited for canada.

In Phoenix it is lawful and accepted to carry firearms in plane view. The CITIZENS of Arizona like to see the reaction to the Subjects from DC, New York, Chicago and other fiefdoms of the left when they exercise their Constitutional Freedoms.
AND the News MEdia like to get these Subjects all jacked up over events that are COMMON in free states...
The current occupant of the white house was never in any danger. mostly because those folks carrying the weapons know when and where to use them. Unlike the sniveling scum of the eastern fiefdoms...

I wonder if the SS arms Obama, and did they at least show him the working end of it before they gave it to him. Imagine how long you would watch it over and over if Obama had pulled a weapon out and fired it at some police officer that was attempting to protect him.

People should carry guns around openly especially in the vicinity of public officials.

I note that the weapon was "slung" over shoulder, NOT held or pointed at anyone.
NOTE: ONLY the Brady "bunch" stated that it COULD be a "loaded" weapon, which is something you can NOT know UNLESS YOU either loaded it or examined it.
The other occasion mentioned was a pistol IN A HOLSTER, and the same note concerning loading applies.
Edit - I lived in Phoenix a while, carried a .45LC revolver OPENLY, and was in the right spot to STOP a drive by.
Was THANKED by several in area who had been "dodging" bullets, INCLUDING the mall security!!
So much for "not needed or appropriate"!

I wouldn't attend one of those events if I knew that there were protesters with guns nearby. Many the intent was to intimidate.
They must have metal detectors which the public has to pass through into the town meetings with Obama, but even if the people with guns stay outside, you don't know what could happen.

I think it's great. The only thing is that I think that these people are paid by the government to do so. They want an incident to take place so that they can enact martial law and take everyones guns away so that we will be helpless against them.

I don't think that it's people carrying guns in plain sight to make a point that you have to worry about. They weren't breaking the law.

Oh, Dear!
I am much happier with people who hide in the trunk of their car with high powered rifles ...(1)
Or your friendly neighborhood mugger who carries a small handgun in his pocket in order to thug your wallet to pay for his "harmless" drug habit ...
So ... nawh! Hidden weapons are so much more "friendlier".
Besides ...you never know when an army of illegals will come storming over the boarder ... And you know Obama won't do anything about it.
