A happy life, is a selfish life. No?

YES!

Update:

Oh, ignorance has never been so beautiful! You've forgotten that this is a philosophy section. Won't you give it the thought it deserves?

Well, to tell you the truth no, its not selfish cause you are only suppose to think about yourself most times. You were born alone you are going to die alone so.. you are alone in this life and need to think about yourself only and how to improve your life and how to be happy.

How else are you going to be happy if you are not happy with yourself first. You are never going to have the people happy and you just have to learn to ignore them and be happy with yourself. As long as you are happy is all that matters and that's not selfish it's just reality =)

it is not selfish. happiness gives way to more happiness. unless you are a bubbly person which can be annoying. peppy is all well in good at a cheer rally or a cheerleading competition. otherwise it gets on most people's nerves and not too many people will take you seriously.

    Not.

Criminals are pretty selfish, right? they certianly arent looking out for the other guy.....

They are not exactly what youd call "happy".

It pans out that he happiest people are doing well in all (or at least most) slices of the pie; self, family, work/groups and mankind as a whole.

  • Interesting. Thinking about it, yes it is. I mean if you do stuff that makes you happy it is a selfish choice, even if your actions to benefit other people. I hope that makes sense, because it does in my head :)

Not at all. I think it is quite the opposite. One will never be truly happy only satisfying themselves. They will always want more, and cannot be pleased or content with what they have. Talk to someone who is truly happy, and you will see that helping others and caring for people is what will make one ultimately happy.

not necessarily, because sometimes being selfish isn't always bad. Especially when you live a very giving life, it's okay to be selfish sometimes when you know it won't hurt another well being.

because we recognize happiness as a state of mind there are variations on the way one can be come "happy" i.e. chemical induction, avoidance of suffering, etc. However the ultimate form of happiness most people strive for as they mature resonates from the love of ones' self/ becoming a loving person. Because loving oneself also involves loving others I have to disagree.

The way to a happy life is to stop worrying about the self so much. Or at least that's how it is for me.

Your way may be good too.

Depends who is talking. Mohatma Gandhi would say differently. Ayn Rand would agree.

Selfish actions are only possible to be undertaken by someone who has an ego, or the false idea of a self. And this type of idea will always lead to suffering.
