Why do people experience strange things after death of loved one, and what is the psychology behind it?
I have noticed over the years that people close to people who have recently die experience unusual things which are related to the dead loved one. One person said they woke up in the middle of the night to smell the persons cologne in their room. Others have hard times describing what they witness. What is the psychology behind these experiences?

You are correct. Also, seeing the ghost of the dead person is very common. People also report seeing the person in parks, stores or in crowded places as well.
I have lived in Korea for 13. years now. When I first got here, I would sit in my office and listen to children playing outside. As I focused on my work, the kids would be yelling and screaming in a game of basketball or some such activity. When my mind was occupied, I could swear I would hear the kids talking English.
The kids did not talk English. It is just the way my mind makes sense out of the environment. English has always been in my environment. I use it to frame my life. Now that I was in a foreign country, my mind still created English words out of the Korean words if I did not focus on them. Once the Korean language was focused on, it was obvious English was not being used.
I thing ghosts and "strange things" you mention are quite a bit like this. We are used to seeing something in our life. When it is gone, we quite naturally miss it. When we see something similar, our brain completes the picture for us. When we are in that half away, half sleeping state of mind, we have vivid dreams that seem real about the person. It's just the way we make sense out of our world.
With that said, believing is seeing. People who believe in ghosts are more likely to experience the phenomena than people who do not. People who think there is an afterlife, are more likely to experience things in accordance with their perceptions.

I am not a psychologist, but I am religious and I believe in the unfathomable! Many ppl believe that the veil between life and the afterlife is thin and they can have interactions/experiences with the dead! At my grandmas funeral I hugged her corpse and swore that I felt her warm loving arms around me, I looked up and their was nothing! Many believe that if there is a strong emotional connection between ppl then they can reach each other a little after death! Religious ppl believe that the body houses a spirit and that when the body dies the spirit lingers and is close to the loved ones to offer comfort after their departure. It is hard for scientists to explain all the paranormal phenomenon, but many experiences are fakes or just made up in the mind as a way of coping with the death of someone close! i hope this helps!

the logic behind this is that it's normal o experience such stuff. It all depends on the kind of bond you had with the dead person.if the dead was a father, mother brother or sister, their death will hunt fo a short while.this is because of the memories you have of them. You see them everyday and have interaction with them before they died. The hippo-campus which is responsible for long time memory place a significant role in recalling all this sweet memories. The feeling of lost is a sort of psychological regurgitation of who that person is and how much love you have for them.

i have not seen a psychological study of this, but of course i have heard similar anecdotes.
What all the people experiencing these things is intense grief.
This could cause effects in perception ( either more sensitive perception of reality or illusions/hallucinations.)
It could also be effected by their belief that they MIGHT experience such things.

I think God gives us these things for comfort. I felt my brother's presence after he died & I saw my dad once after he died. My mother heard the screen door open & no one was there, but she smelled my dad. My other brother had dreams where he would talk to our dad & brother.
