For your short trip and what you plan to do there is NO reason to rent a car. Cabs would be cheeper than paying for the rental car and parking.
If you hotel is near Union Square you will find lots of public transportation options for the ball park and wharf. But if you want good seafood DO NOT eat at the Wharf. As a matter of fact limiting your time at the wharf is a good idea it is nothing but a tourist trap.
For some great seafood downtown try
Tadich Grill 240 California-The Original Cold Day Restaurant: An old boy’s kind of place that has been around since 1849. Great seafood, chops and sourdough. Stiff drinks, no reservations, but counter seats are first come first served.
Or for the ultimate romantic dinner [be warned expensive!]
Farallon – 450 Post- Seafood served in an amazing underwater garden setting

Agree with the others--not necessary to rent a car. Take a cable car to the wharf and then walk from one end to the other for amusement and shopping and good food. (Disagree with the S. F. resident about food at the wharf but then he lives there and for a tourist it is a must see and do.) Our favorites on the wharf are the Franciscan overlooking the bay with good food and a fantastic view. It is in the center of the wharf on the bay side. Our other fave is the Buena Vista at the end of the Powell/Hyde cable car line. It too has a view of the bay and reasonably priced, homemade food and great Irish Coffee (their specialty). All ages stop there so you will fee comfortable.

Yo'! ok enable's see --> i'm uncertain of any skate parks that are in San Franciso, maximum persons fairly merely skate on the organic terrain/streets. There panorama is so distinctive which you will virtually locate everywhere to skate, no remember the place you're. As for a hotel - you will ought to cough up some money. I recommend the cheap, decrease priced lodges are in particularly in neighborhoods that isn't carry you an awful lot exhilaration. i might recommend hotel Kabuki, it is placed in San Francisco's Japantown --> extraordinarily cool. As for places to bypass to; there is a super number of places to bypass! you are able to take the vacationer course and bypass internet site seeing and are available across; or grow to be a city-resident and attempt to do usual issues that city human beings do. [inspect the hyperlinks under] Oh yeah. The bus is a million.50 for ninety minutes of driving time. Trollies are the comparable...i think of? i'm no longer extremely specific nevertheless. :] have exciting!

I also agree - cars are a problem in SF.
Check out the tour buses - some of them will take you to the places you want to visit. The muni bus is a little unpredictable, the cable cars are a little fun. BART is usually on time. It is a good walking city if you avoid the hills.

You really don't need a car; in fact, it will cost you a ton to park it at the ballpark. Public transit in SF will get you everywhere you need to go; SF Muni's website can help you plot out which busses to take and usually, the busdrivers can reassure you if you're wondering if you're headed in the right direction. Be sure and check out a walking tour if you'd like to see some beautiful hidden treasures and views! SF is one of the few cities you can live quite comfortably without a car.

Having a car for intercity trips gives you the downsides of being expensive (parking), and a hassle (traffic and locating parking), without giving you much upside in terms of convenience or adding to the places you can access. Everything you wish to see is served by pretty decent public transportation and if you want to go out late at night the money saved on a rental car and parking will surely allow you to cab it. Look up any major hotel and note their overnight parking rates, ouch!
I hope you guys have a great time in The City!

Agree with the previous poster. Sometimes having a car in SF is more of a pain (crowded streets, non-existent or expensive parking).
BART, Muni, CalTrain, or just plain walking should get you to most points within the city.
If you do get a car remember to "chock" your wheels to the curb if parking on a hill. That means if you park facing downhill, turn wheels into the curb. If facing uphill, turn front wheels out to the road. Doing so prevents your car from sliding downhill, and you will be ticketed if you don't do it.

I visited once with no car and did just great. Take the BART to downtown area (if your hotel is there). Buses are pretty simple and walking isn't too bad if you stay near Market St. and Warf area.

You can get around well enough on BART and Muni. Walking isn't too bad either depending on where you are staying.
