Why does "God" force a girl to marry the man who raped her?

"If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives." - Deut. 22.28-29

Notice that there is no provision here for the girl to refuse to marry this monster. Why would a just and loving god force a girl to marry the man who violated her?

.

Update:

NoTrueScotsman - Even if that is so, why did "God" EVER force a girl to marry the man who raped her? That is, if he was a loving and kind god?

.

Update 2:

debbie2243 - see my comment above to NoTrueScotsman.

.

Update 3:

Mike Matney - Your post showed a way out for the father to decide. If the father decided that his daughter would marry her rapist, she had no say in the matter.

That was in the Mosaic covenant...that is obsolete now.

If a man rapes a woman now in America he goes to jail, if her family doesn't find him first. Then if that happens he must have run off to Mexico, never to be heard of again.

Back then if she were violated God made him responsible for her for life...and any children that happened along....as no other man would have her.

IDK if the girl was required to marry the rapist, I think it was just required that the man make it an option, and also pay. Of course it was written in a completely different time period and social mindset. It is not just the New Testament that is filled with irregularities and contradictions. The OT has enough to spare as well. Most people today, in regards to the 10 Commandments, consider rape to fall somewhere between "Do not Murder" and "Do not steal", numbers 6 and 8, respectively. Rape is actually a little of both. That being said, interestingly enough, rule # 7 is, "Do not commit Adultery". Adultery is defined as having sex with someone else's wife. This rule does kind of reveal the view toward women as property, cuz the offense is basically defined as stealing property from another man, more-so than "cheating". IDK who is okay with a woman marrying her rapist these days, regardless of their religious affiliation. But I guess back then she didn't have an option to marry anyone outside of her rapist. It may have also been a means to ensure that any child resulting from the union would be provided for. (fathers were still important for the well being of a family back then, cuz welfare and alimony didn't exist yet)

Humans invented religions whereas God invented spirituality, not religions.

God did not say: "If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives." - Deut. 22.28-29

Author Deut-something said it as in Deut. 22.28-29.

Usually the rapist is stoned to death. Deut 22:25. The rapist's life is spared in this case to provide for her.

There is a way out though.

Exodus 22:16-17 "If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife. (17) If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins.

I notice that sometimes the family went outside the law and killed the rapist anyway. Amnon was killed by Tamar's brothers, for example.

It could have to do with the time context.

Men were the sole providers, and women couldn't just live alone -- they could easily starve to death (and many did). Now consider also that being a virgin in that time was the number one qualifier for being a wife. If she had been raped, no one would have cared for her, and she would've been terribly disgraced.

That poor girl. Imagine the trauma of having to marry her rapist.

It kinda sends the wrong message too doesn't it? If you're going to rape a girl, rape the girl you really want. Then she'll be your property.

    Sick.

Because women were nothing more than property to be bartered and handed around like cattle.

because he's a fcker whose favourite entertainment is to see people suffer and women get raped, what a fckin perv. IF he exists that is.

Throughout the entire bible, women are treated as property.

Later parts of the Bible invalidate the earlier parts. This is one of the parts Christians decided doesn't apply anymore.
