Why do people tip so poorly?

I have worked as a server for almost 5 years now through college. The most frustrating thing to me is when I give people the best of myself to my guests and they leave me a raunchy tip.

I dont think people understand how much work goes into waiting tables. Some places are harder than others because they require sidework like maintaining your section, rolling silverware, expo-ing food, cleaning and bussing tables etc....

People will come in and order a lunch special for 5.99 then sit at your table for an hour and a half then leave a $1 tip or so. That is simply unacceptable. People should know servers make $2.13 an hour and we don't get paychecks because that $2.13 an hour goes to pay taxes.

If people don't have the money to tip, or don't appreciate the service servers give to them than why dont they just go to mc donalds where they can eat cheap and not worry about a tip!???????? (And save my butt an hour of time waiting on them)

=(

If you take up a table for an exaggerated amount of time you are keeping the server from obtaining tips from other tables. Also, if you use a coupon OR if you end up getting part of your meal for free or at a discount for any reason you should always tip your server based on how much your meal would have originally cost! Plenty of people will use coupons and get nearly 50% off their $50 bill and then leave a $2.00 tip. I think the reason people tip poorly is because they just don't know how to tip well. The best tippers are normally people who are or were servers themselves. Like, I never know what the appropriate amount is to tip my hair stylist or my tattoo artist because I was never one of those people, but I know what a good tip is for a server. We need to create awareness so that people know! Think about it people...$1 extra a table times 10 tables is an extra $10 for a server and is that $1 really going to break the bank if you leave it for your server?! I actually had a guest one time leave me a note about building sales to get better tips he said if I sell desserts I can make an extra $2 from a table or something, obviously that guy did not know that people don't tip that well!

I know I'll always leave a $5 tip unless the service is really great then I give a $10. However if I'm getting it to go or I am at a buffet where all the waiter does is poor me a drink or I think the service wasn't that great then I give $1 or $2. Isn't it supposed to be 15%? On a $6 meal that would just be like $1 tip tho right?

Actually, when I was working as a server, I got mixed tips for black people. Once, I had a group of 4 black people come into the restaurant with 15 minutes to go before we closed. I'd been working a double and was as tired as could be, but when they sat in my section, I perked up and was as sweet as sugar to them like I was to all of my customers. I took great care of them making sure their food was perfect and the ice never touched the bottom of their glasses (they way I did all of my customers). At the end of their meal they gave me money for their over $50 tab for which the change was exactly a quarter (as in 25 cents). I gave them their change, told them (with a big smile) to have a great night and to come back again. They left smiling 45 minutes after closing time and I figured I'd done a great job. But, when I went to clean off their table, all I found for a tip was that one quarter for their change. I was so upset that I yelled "Oh hell no!". When my manager asked what was up, I showed them their "tip". He rolled his eyes and said "What @$$holes!" However, there was also an older black man who came in once just to have some wings and fries and watch the game. I took extra special care of him because he was the only one in my section and the night was pretty slow. Even though his tab was only $10, he left me a $20 on the table! I thought that was so sweet! I will agree that the majority of black people won't tip properly, but then it's also a proven statistic that most black people are from humble means and don't have the money to leave a proper tip (which I've always believed that if you don't want or can't leave a proper tip that you shouldn't go out). I totally agree with you and understand what you mean. This truly has nothing to do with race. It's simply an observation.

Yes, it would round up to about $1.00 for 15%, but if she has 5 tables, and they're all sitting there for a hr, with her $2.oo an hr, then she's only getting $7 an hr!,,,bout what .50 more than min wage???

and when it changes, even less than min wage???

they prob tip poor because they

    1. want to save money....these type of people are reallly proud of themselves..

    2. they think you're poor and that anything they throw toward you , you should be greatful for

    3. they don't think you did enough to deserve it. they think well, she only brought it out and brought me a drink, shouldn't a dollar cover it..

they don't see how much stuff was done inbetween..

add: 4. their naive. until i went somewhere to apply as a waiter, I had NO clue they made so little... and then i almost passed out when it said you share the money with the host and bussers,

I completely friggin agree with you! I used to be a server at a steakhouse and I got sick and tired of working so hard and running so much for these people that I ended leaving the service for good. It even bothered me that people would come in, buy the cheapest plate (chixken tenders... and when Zaxby's was literally across the street), drink water with lemon and sugar ("homemade" lemonade) and leave a $2 tip. How crazy.

I agree with you and do not think it is the right thing to do. I guess the reason is that 15% of $6.00 is 90 cents and people usually tip at that rate. They figure the tip before the tax. It's a shame. They are saving money on the meal and forget how hard you are working.

Let me get this straight -- you are complaining because you got a 17% tip when 15% is the now-inflated norm??!! You ungrateful fool!! The new usual tip is now 10% or less. And yes, that is BEFORE tax. You don't really think that, when your city raises the tax, the servers get more money, do you? I agree that you've got to get a new career. If you've been going to college for 5 years now, isn't it about time to graduate?

It sounds as though you are upset with the job field that you have chosen. You will always find a few people that are cheap tippers, or people who have no more money to tip than they put on the table. I hope that you succeed in whatever you do.

it depends who you serve- if it is a good waiter/ress, then ill give a decent tip, but if its a bad waiter i wont.. ill give it too a charity instead.

i think you should when returning ones change, from the bill, give lots of coins and then theyll have no choice but to leave you some or look cheap.

also if you target families, they chip and businessmen/ posh people.

p.s. get a new job, your ratings suck
