O Riley did you see his show tonight......?

ATOON — The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country's health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.

Dr. Anne Doig says patients are getting less than optimal care and she adds that physicians from across the country - who will gather in Saskatoon on Sunday for their annual meeting - recognize that changes must be made.

"We all agree that the system is imploding, we all agree that things are more precarious than perhaps Canadians realize," Doing said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

"We know that there must be change," she said. "We're all running flat out, we're all just trying to stay ahead of the immediate day-to-day demands."

The pitch for change at the conference is to start with a presentation from Dr. Robert Ouellet, the current president of the CMA, who has said there's a critical need to make Canada's health-care system patient-centred. He will present details from his fact-finding trip to Europe in January, where he met with health groups in England, Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and France.

His thoughts on the issue are already clear. Ouellet has been saying since his return that "a health-care revolution has passed us by," that it's possible to make wait lists disappear while maintaining universal coverage and "that competition should be welcomed, not feared."

In other words, Ouellet believes there could be a role for private health-care delivery within the public system.

He has also said the Canadian system could be restructured to focus on patients if hospitals and other health-care institutions received funding based on the patients they treat, instead of an annual, lump-sum budget. This "activity-based funding" would be an incentive to provide more efficient care, he has said.

Doig says she doesn't know what a proposed "blueprint" toward patient-centred care might look like when the meeting wraps up Wednesday. She'd like to emerge with clear directions about where the association should focus efforts to direct change over the next few years. She also wants to see short-term, medium-term and long-term goals laid out.

"A short-term achievable goal would be to accelerate the process of getting electronic medical records into physicians' offices," she said. "That's one I think ought to be a priority and ought to be achievable."

A long-term goal would be getting health systems "talking to each other," so information can be quickly shared to help patients.

Doig, who has had a full-time family practice in Saskatoon for 30 years, acknowledges that when physicians have talked about changing the health-care system in the past, they've been accused of wanting an American-style structure. She insists that's not the case.

"It's not about choosing between an American system or a Canadian system," said Doig. "The whole thing is about looking at what other people do."

"That's called looking at the evidence, looking at how care is delivered and how care is paid for all around us (and) then saying 'Well, OK, that's good information. How do we make all of that work in the Canadian context? What do the Canadian people want?' "

Doig says there are some "very good things" about Canada's health-care system, but she points out that many people have stories about times when things didn't go well for them or their family.

"(Canadians) have to understand that the system that we have right now - if it keeps on going without change - is not sustainable," said Doig.

"They have to look at the evidence that's being presented and will be presented at (the meeting) and realize what Canada's doctors are trying to tell you, that you can get better care than what you're getting and we all have to participate in the discussion around how do we do that and of course how do we pay for it."

You pretty much said it all. Liberals are holding this system up on a pedestal suggesting we should model our system after it when it's actually failing. God bless.

No doubt there are many a very very few women out there who may think like this - there are scam artists of every ilk who will do just about anything to get your money, and some happen to be women who use their womanly wiles. These men who made these claims were "had" by such scam artists and they are, no doubt, pissed that they let themselves be scammed. It just happened to be by a women. Shame on them for falling for it! I am a feminist, by the way. I would have to have heard/seen the show and observe the body language to tell you if it was mysogynist or not. Since it was O'Riley, I have no doubt there was an element of that in the mix. I have a hard time with the claim that the women "persuade the man to impregnate them". Perhaps persuade the man to have sex with them, but why would a man willingly and knowingly impregnate a woman if they weren't married? And why weren't they wearing a condom if they did not intend to impregnate the woman? Did they get married, then get divorced after the woman had the child? That is usually the only time child support comes into play, and if so, was it warranted? I'm not getting the full picture here, the whole thing just doesn't sound right to me.

The health care reform put forth by President Obama is NOT the Canadian version. Apparently, Canadians are seeing the advantage of private health insurance, along with a "Public Option", which is more like what we are trying to get. I plan to keep Medicare and the expensive supplemental private insurance because I can afford it. However, for those who cannot afford it, I want to help the effort to provide health care for them. How can that be wrong? I'm thinking that Republicans are only interested in hoping the President will fail, and that has more to do with race than religion!

Add: Have you ever wondered why drugs are so much cheaper in Canada and Mexico? You say all politicians lie, so you must know that the opposition to Obama's plan are lying to you! Don't you believe they are influenced by the insurance lobbyists for personal reasons? You are naive! Private insurance has become too expensive for even middle-class Americans. Why do you support that?

The Libs want respond to this! The article you site is what scares Americans to death{literally)! If this health care plan passes w/ a public option and/or co-op option it will bankrupt America! Our national debt is so out of hand it is suicidal for this country to restructure the health care system. Health care needs reform not government control, the Liberal-Socialist party has been catering to this idea since FDR for all Americans and illegals to get free health care! The Liberal-Socialist party has entertained Communist ideas since the 30's and this is just another "good for all" entitlement program! Hell, Democrat politicians don't even want to be put on a public option but they expect middle class Americans to embrace it! It is scary that theses people in Congress and our dear Leader want to fleece the middle class and the rich to take care of the poor that are all ready being taken care of through our taxes, i.e. food stamps, housing, medicaid, free meds, pre K and the list goes on and on!

Libs and Cons would both be amazed at how quickly costs would plummet if the AMA and Pharmaceutical lobbyists all disappeared (anybody know of space aliens who abduct for hire?)

The problem, as always, is not "who pays what" but "why we pay over $7,500/yr per capita when, say, Taiwan pays $725/yr per capita for equally good care. And they never subsidized at all until the mid to late nineties. They grumbled when premiums were raised to $20/mo.

Heres a clue... this guy now has a job thats main responsiblility is to get canadian docs more. More money, more free time, more time to see patients, etc.

No surprise hes complaining about the system and wanting to improve the lives of the physicains he is now representing.

Note, however, there are very few patients who want a US system in Canada. By and large, the Canadians are very happy with their healthcare.

Reality Check -- "Racist Bigoted conservatives" look to be right.

Once again libs get caught operating on propaganda...

    Rob L:

"Canadian life expectancy:78 (male), 83 (female)

United States life expectancy: 74.37 (male), 80.05 (female)

    Care to argue against that?"

McDonald's, KFC, Jack in the Box, Wendy's, Carl's JR, Chick-Filet, Frozen Foods, High fructose diets, etc. etc...

You can't spout static statistics and make a claim like "the health care system is solely responsible for life expectancy".

    C'mon boss -- you're smarter than that.

An interesting look into Canadian Care: One man's journey...

    EDIT:

Obamanable, they have all of those things in Canada; don't blame the food.

And if their system is so awful, wouldn't you at least expect them to have a lower life expectancy than our country? The health care system is a huge component.
