Price of living in Singapore?
Hi, a friend of mine is moving to Singapore from Ireland, and I am looking for some insider info.
I have 3 questions for people who live in or have lived in Singapore-
1) What is a good area for a young person to live that is not too expensive and convenient for traveling to/from work in the CDB/Marina area?
2) What would you say is the the average cost of living per month for a person and are there any hidden expenses( rent, food, bills, transport etc)
3) Is there anything that isn't apparently obvious that she would need to know about moving there
I appreciate anything you can tell me, but please only answer if you know something. Also, could you state what experience of Singapore you have, I need to know the answer is reliable so I can pass the information to my friend. Cheers!
Katie xxx
Note for Vijay -my friend will be working in Singapore (it says that in my question). And yes, she is aware that it is an Asian country! Why should she not go to Singapore because she is white?? There are Asians living in Ireland too!
In regard to your experience with the person in the Embassy, 1 person does not represent everyone else form that country. In my opinion that is a really bad attitute to have.

Hi Katie,
Good day! need to consider the following cost to live in singapore.
1.house rent average S$ 1200 to 2500 (depending sharing / individual)
2. utility bills average S$ 150
3. internet connection S$ 70
4. TV cable channel S$ 50 (minimum)
5. TV license cost annual (S$ 100)
6. mobile bills (S$ 50 to 200) -depends upon usage
7. overseas telephone calls personal S$ (50 to 500)
8. food: breakfast: $7 (one good coffee cost u $4) lunch: $7
9. provisions / miscellaneous s$150
10. tax when your salary is approx 10k per month (S$ 825)
11. entertainment (each beer cost you average $8 to S$16)
CBD area is good to work, I prefer to stay in Central area like Spottiswoode park, everton park, cantonement towers, tanjong pagar or china town (where you can walk to office take about 10 to 15 minutes)
everytime you take a taxi from or to the office you need to pay a ERP / CBD. invariabily living for away you will have to take taxi atleast few times in a month which would cost you much more than staying in the city area (rent alone) or outside rent + transportation.
Hope the above info will be useful.
cheers shank

Exchange your money to Singapore dollars IN Singapore, not in Europe. Exchange it where locals do it (not the airport or Orchard Road where they rip tourists off), do it in the CBD area (Raffles Place, which is near Marina Bay). You can negotiate the rate if you're exchanging a large amount. You'll never close to the bank-to-bank exchange rate in the West but you'll get close to it in Singapore, or even the same if you're lucky.
Once you're out of Singapore airport, say goodbye to feeling unsafe (unless you're a criminal). Children can walk down the main bar areas in the middle of the night without a hint of feeling unsafe.
If you're in Singapore long-term and don't mind sharing, rent your own 3-bedroom condo apartment. It's possible to live almost free this way (eg. $2,300 condo in Hillview costs $2,300 a month. You rent out the master room for $1,300 a month, common room for $800 a month, so you pay only $300 a month for the other common room. Bills are about $70 per person per month. Asian food cooking's cheap but western food's western price (1 litre of cheap milk costs $2.70).
For CBD/Marina Bay area, I'd try live on the red train line at a place like Ang Mo Kio- less than 20 minutes to town but not as expensive as being close town). The green train line is good too- it's only about 20 minutes from far away Jurong East to Raffles Place (main CBD station). Singapore a small place thanks to efficient public transport so distance isn't a major issue- even if you live in nowhere land it won't take more than about an hour to get to work.

I would rather stay in beautiful Ireland...Singapore is warm and humid all year round with many thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
Public transport is extremely convenient, so you don't have to worry about where you live, but choose an area according to your liking and budget. Personally I like Yishun Town and Pasir Ris, Tampines Towns in the east as these have good ambience.
You can choose to Live in an HDB flat where 80% of Singaporeans live in or a Condo if you can afford.
Transport would be around 100SGD a month and food will be around 300-400SGD for a single person-for my lifestyle anyway.
Singapore is safe everywhere, but the west areas of Clementi, Queenstown...are 'old' Towns and I don't appreciate them too much.
Living in Downtown Orchard Road will be marvellous.

Dont believe what raw dinka said. It is illegal to sublet your rented apartment to other people. you can forget about working in singapore or living in it if you commit an offence, you might even be sent to jail and be ban from ever coming into singapore
Other than that, living in singapore should be carefree and easy.

whats the purpose ur friend coming here? as an employee or as visitor? define that first; few years back, i contact ireland consulate here in singapore but they never reply even once; so from that day, i thought irish people r NOT friendly n welcoming; if irish bring such attitude here then it's very HARD to adapt coz there r asians around; moreover, singaporeans r complaining that foreigners r NOT integrating into singapore society; TRY UK, USA or other western countries that has whites majority;
as ur question: singapore is 10th expensive city in the world; if ur friend wants to live near CBD then it would cost more than $5000 so be prepared; good luck
