    Caesar Augustus

Luke 2:1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

Caesar Augustus, I would assume though Jesus was speaking of the taxes, the passage here wasn't specific, but Caesar was the ruler in Jesus' time

Actually none... it WASN'T a SPECIFIC reference, but dealt with the SYSTEM in place at the time, which didn't really change when new "Caesars" came along.

The question to which he was responding was about the system and not the particular person in that position.

Matthew 22:17 "Now tell us what you think about this: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

Augustus was the Roman emperor when Jesus was born. Then Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero. There were more after as well, take your pick. When did Jesus say that and why. Sounds more like an instruction to obey the ruling elite to me.

Augustus would have been in power at the time assuming this was written during the generally-accepted time frame of Jesus' life. But I think the word was meant to refer to any temporal authority and not a specific Roman Emporer.

To the "CEASAR" who was Ruler and King at the time...I think the descrepancy was about paying taxes to Ceasar and Jesus simply told the people that they had to pay their taxes to Ceasar, not forgetting that our Father in Heaven also should receive offerings/tithing and sacrifices that they did in those times.....

HE WAS TELLING US THAT WE ARE TO OBEY THE LAW OF THE LAND ,,,

CAESAR WAS THE LAW IN THIS TIME !!!

THE ISSUE WAS THAT THE PHARISEES WERE ALWAYS TRYING TO TRAP JESUS IN SOME ISSUE TO DUE WITH THE LAW OF MOSES ,,HE JUST SET THEM STRAIGHT AND TOLD THEM IT IS GOOD TO OBEY THE MADE MADE LAWS ... OF COURSE IF IT GOES DIRECTLY AGAINST THE TRUTH ,,,WE ARE TO OBEY GOD ,,FIRST AND NOT THE LAW ,, I SAY THAT CAUSE MORE AND MORE THE WORLD IS GOING AGAINST GOD AND HIS STATUTES !!!

It would have been Tiberius at the time, but I don't think he was being specific.
