  • How would ObamaCare bureaucrats resolve this situation?

    NEWT GINGRICH :

    A 3-year-old boy was recently diagnosed with a rare, aggressive, soft-tissue cancer in his bladder. Radiation treatment would have stunted the growth of his pelvic bones, hips and bladder and left him disabled. Radical surgery could remove his bladder, prostate and portions of his rectum. That would have left him impotent, using a colostomy bag, and urinating through another bag in his abdomen.

    His parents chose a third option—a new "unproven" therapy where a proton beam precisely targeted the radiation dose so that it didn't cripple their son for life. The boy is now cancer-free and his body functions normally.

    [25 points, 5 green stars, and 10 blue stars, and password to my Y!A account]

    There is a very long rod cut out of single-crystal of cubic lattice material along [001] direction.

    The material is made of symmetric tooth picks

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Toothpick_s.jpg

    (that is, atoms are tooth picks, and "symmetric" means that the ends are indistinguishable) fixed at cubically arranged nodes, and tooth picks can freely rotate around their fixed centers, in dimensional space.

    Every tooth pick interacts with its 6 neighbors, and energy of pair-wise interaction is

    E = +sin²(φ),

    where φ is angle between the tooth picks. Such interaction naturally tends to align nearby tooth picks in parallel.

    Radius of the rod is 1,000,000,000 unit cells.

    Estimate (estimate only!) energy of ground state per layer (001) of atoms when boundary conditions on the lateral surface are:

    a) all tooth picks on the surface are held at right angle to the surface

    b) all tooth picks on the surface are bi-sectors between positive-x direction and outward normal to the surface.

  • Tennis Ball Cannon -- height of ascent?

    I'm going to build a tennis ball cannon for my school science project. The balls should exit my cannon at roughly 200 feet per second -- which is exactly 3x times the terminal velocity.

    If I point the cannon straight upwards?

    I'm going to build a tennis ball cannon for my school science project. The balls should exit my cannon at roughly 40 meter per second -- which is exactly twice the terminal velocity.

    If I point the cannon straight upwards?

    g = 10 meter/secong/second

  • A cylinder rapidly spinning about horizontal axis was dropped from height h=5 meter?

    and landed at distance d = 0.5 meter from the the point directly below its initial position.

    Cylinder:

    mass m = 10 kg

    length L = 1 meter

    radius r = 10 cm

    Environment:

    acceleration of gravity g = 10 m/s²

    density of air ρ = 1kg/m³

    How fast was the cylinder spinning?

  • How long will one year last after malicious space aliens sabotage solar system?

    The aliens arrived and constructed a spherical forced field around the sun of radius equal to one astronomic unit r=1au.

    Then they also changed orbital parameters of Earth (orbital speed, initial position, etc) to make the Earth bounce off from the force field elastically and without friction on the outside, in such a fashion that orbit of Earth resembles now six petal flower like this

    http://www.enchantedlearning.com/graphicorganizers...

    The whole six petal flower is inscribed into a circle of radius R = 2au.

  • How does the magic work?

    I have a magical formula for volume of any solid :

    V = 1/6 (bottom base + 4 midsection + top base) * height.

    It works like a Swiss clockwork.

    Volume of pyramid:

    bottom base area = S

    midsection area = S/4

    top base area (the tip) =0

    V = 1/6 (S + 4 S/4 + 0) h = 1/3 Sh

    correct

    Volume of a brick:

    correct

    Volume of a tetrahedron standing on an edge

    http://mathcentral.uregina.ca/QQ/database/QQ.09.98...

    bottom base area (the bottom edge) = 0

    midsection area = 1/2

    top base area (the top edge) 0

    V = 1/6 (0 + 4 * 1/2 + 0) = 1/3

    correct

    Volume of a sphere

    bottom base area (the South pole) = 0

    midsection area = π

    top base area (the North pole) 0

    V = 1/6 (0 + 4 * π + 0) * 2 = 4/3 π

    correct

    Volume of a hemi-sphere

    bottom base area (equatorial) = π

    midsection area = 3/4 π

    top base area (the North pole) 0

    V = 1/6 (0 + 4 * 3/4 π + π) = 2/3 π

    correct

  • What does this parable intend to teach to proletarian supporters of Barack Obama?

    "A man planted a vineyard, and rented it out to some farmers, and went into another country for a long time. At the proper season, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him, and sent him away empty. He sent yet another servant, and they also beat him, and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. He sent yet a third, and they also wounded him, and threw him out. The lord of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that seeing him, they will respect him.’ "But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and spread the wealth.’ They threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

    What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them? He will come and destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others."

  • How do I find this integral ∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ (z+Z)/|r+R|³ dxdydz dXdYdZ?

    ∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ ∫ (r+R)/|r+R|³ dxdydz dXdYdZ

    where vectors r and R are

    r = (x,y,z)

    R = (X,Y,Z)

    and |r+R| is absolute value of vector r+R

    |r+R| = √[(x+X)² +(y+Y)² + (z+Z)²]

    Integration is done inside upper half of unit sphere, that is

    0 < z, Z

    0 < R, r < 1

  • Who knows capitalist economics better Barack Obama or Karl Marx?

    Since the polls showed that Americans liked their health care, Obama switched from "health care reform" to "health insurance reform". Like Al Gore. His stump speech nowadays is "greedy insurance companies overcharge the customers and deny them surgeries and pocket astronomical profits".

    That would score him F in Karl Marx' class on capitalism. Unlike our ignorant president, Prof.Marx did some extensive research on capitalism before trashing it.

    His conclusion which he made in his book "Das Kapital" : in free market capitalism no industry can enjoy profits above average, let alone astronomical profits. Equal profits on equal capital. Capital is redistributed by greedy investors among various industries, to maximize profits.

    Another point very central to Marxism : capitalists do not make profits by robbing their customers. Capitalists make profits by exploiting employees, not customers.
