Do you know how to get rid of the Personal Anti-virus program that is actually a virus?
I noticed lots of people have problems with this "program" that is actually male-ware. The trick for getting rid of it they actually tell you in the help section under how do I get this program off my computer. It tells you to go to c:/program files/and under Personal Anti-virus in the folder there is an uninstall. Unfortunately by the time we found that, it had already deleted some programs (games, internet explorer) that need to be re-loaded. When this virus hit me I ended up having to take it back to Best Buy and they had to completely wipe everything and start from scratch. So I wanted everyone else to know before it gets to that point. Has anyone found a way a good way to keep it from coming back?
We have XP in this house hold. We don't like Vista.
"Personal Antivirus" is the name of the program. It looks like a real virus removal program but it sneaks into your system with out being asked and tells you, you have virus' and have to buy the program to get rid of them. By then it's gotten into your system and is very difficult to remove. I have web-root spyware now, but want to know if anyone has found anything better to keep out this malicious program.

Ok you really should provide some more info on this. Like the name of the antivirus/malware and how you and your friends got this. Also give precise details on what it did. Well from what you told me it looks like this is a systemwide virus that runs a process.
To remove this folow these instruction. Tell your friends to only start their computor in safe mode. To do this pres f8 or f11 repeatedly after you turn on your computer. When you boot in safe mode you only boot vital system processes. After doing this uninstall that antivirus. Restart into normal mode. Now go to click start, all programs, acessories, system tools, and system restore. when you run system restore it basically restores the vital system files and program files to an earlier time. Pick a time before you installed that bad antivirus. It will take like 10 min. After it is done download a good free antivirus. I reccomend malwarebytes or avg free. After installing run a full scan. I reccommend scanning with both. After you are done uninstall them and go buy a decent antivirus. Nod32 by eset is good.

hello
oh please! lets keep this simple. chances are, you cant visit many web site right now without the malware popping up. so get a friend or on another computer to download spybot S&D. install it on your infected computer and update it. now reboot in safe mode. run spybot to scan and delete all it finds. this should do it on the first try. if not, it might require a second scan in safe mode. a suggestion to save time. clean out your temp and temp internet folder first. your TIF could have some 10,000 files in there. you dont need the contents and why waste time scanning those 1000's of files.
