Is U.S. a DEMOCRACY or PLUTOCRACY?

How does a supposed government of the people legislate policies that are so much against the people? Isn't this legalized crookedness and how did it come about?

http://bravenewfilms.org/blog/?p=20619

Update:

Thank you for input...to be more clear, a government is mandated to serve the people of the nation and uphold the constitution of the republic. Then how can they legislate policies that allows the billionaire in the video destro so many people's lives (jobs, pensions,...) ?How can this happen in a republic or democracy? Am I am missing ?something?

The US is a republic. If it were a true "democracy" every bill that came out of congress would have to be put to a public vote, and every vote would be worth the same. We elect representitives to vote on our behalf.

Unfortunately, the people whom we elect to represent us very rarely live up to their promises. It doesn't matter if they have a D or a R next to their name, they only serve to further their own interests and the interests of the wealthy elite that control the country. Is it a surprise to anyone that most politicians have all gone to the same IVY league schools, and have all mostly been lawyers, businessmen or politicians throughout their lives? What really seperates one politician from the other besides the letter next to their name. If we want true change it will have to come from common people, not Washington.

Plutocracy is definable two ways: 1. a government or state in which the wealthy class rules. Or: 2. the rule or power of wealth or of the wealthy.

While the US is still a democracy (I mean we DID elect all those idiots and DC and such) it has also had some marked plutocracy in it. Now if you ask a member of the CPUSA (Communist Party USA), the US is almost totally plutocratic with some imperialism mixed in. But most of the polices are not against the people. Many many many people don't want some of the things that have been legislated lately, but they have not been 'against' the people persay. In most people's personal lives, they are not worse off today than they were before some of the laws were passed. So while many corrupt things are happening in DC, we are more democratic than plutocratic (for now)

The US is a Constitutional Republic. The word "Democracy" is not in the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, or the US Constitution, ...not once.

"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine." Thomas Jefferson

"Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide." John Adams

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner." Benjamin Franklin

The USA is defined as a Republic.

Article IV of the Constitution of the United States "guarantee[s] to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government."

But we are becoming a fascist government.

A republic. A democracy is where the people rule while still ensuring the rights and privledges of the minority.

    This is not the US.

It's going to be a deadocracy if we don't get our heads out of our butts.

If some people had their way it would be a theocracy
