Lettuce seeds from own grown plants?

Does anyone know how to get lettuce seeds from home grown lettuce plants?

Our lettuce plants are now going growing upwards and have flowers on them, do we need to wait until these die off before getting the seeds?

Does anyone know what to do then?

Thank you

Let them grow until they die and start to dry out. Pull the entire plant and shake it over a news paper spread out flat. The seeds will fall onto the news paper.

Pick up the paper and all the seeds will collect in the center fold. Just tilt the paper and all the seeds will slide into a jar or envelope. Seal and label your container of seeds so you won't forget what they are by next spring.

Next year use your lettuce seeds to plant a 3 to 4 ft. strip of lettuce every 2 - 3 weeks all summer long. You will have fresh lettuce even during the hot spells, it just won't last as long as the spring and fall lettuce.

Let them continue to grow. They will appear to die off. Than collect the seeds from the pods.

You'll probably not get true plants from your own seed. Just go out and buy some.
