Should the White House be able to go through facebook to look for your political views?

The WH has put out an RFP for bidding that would mine social networking pages for your political views. Is this a violation of our constitutional rights?

This is a two part answer.

First, from the social network side, please god people THINK before you post stuff on these sites. You are essentially feeding your personal information into a giant database that is liable to be associated with you for the rest of your life. As data mining gets better, little insignificant information you leave about yourself thinking nobody but close friends will read will suddenly become available to all sorts of people you don't want to know it. Future employers, landlords, the government, insurance companies. THINK before you post.

As to the White House, I'm curious what section of the Constitution gives the executive the authority to spend tax payers money violating their privacy.

  • I find it interesting that Liberals would scream bloody murder if the Bush Administration did the same thing. The End justifies the means with Fascists. All the left cares about is your wallet, as if sending your money to Washington and Albany does anything to help the economy in your community. That money that flows back ends up in the pockets of contractors and union supporters. Ever wonder why State Capitals are always loaded and the outer cities are soaked in Poverty?

It depends on how they use the information. I was a democrat for 40 years. I donated to Clinton's campaign last year but I have since done a complete turn around. I no longer get emails, junk mail, etc, from the democratic party but I am still registered as a democrat. How do they know they are wasting their propaganda on me now? Or have they just stopped doing that now? I have been getting emails from the conservatives.

I did answer the fishy email address by saying the health care bill was fishy but they wrote me off before that. I find that interesting especially since I donated. They usually never leave you alone once you do that. Last I heard, we still have 1st amendment rights.

Not as long as it was told to you upfront. Just as some sites say they will put cookies on your computer so they can find out what pages you visit and target you with specific ads. I'm sure the ads I see on Yahoo are different from the ones you see based on my internet history.

If they were to discriminate against certain people based on this, you may have a point. I'd be interested to see what their final goal is and what they want to do with the info that they mine.

If you put it on Facebook it's there for everyone to see, making it public information. If you put it in the public domain, why should the White House (Or any other interested party) NOT be able to look at it?

I don't see the problem. You don't HAVE to state your political affiliation, after all.

The White House should want to know what people think of them. As long as they don't get our personal information and spam us with mail or use our opinions to try to blackball us then it is fine. I would like to have Obama informed of how much respect has gone down for him since he has gained the office.

No it's not Unconstitutional geeze.... If you're FOOLISH enough to post ANYTHING on Face book, Myspace etc.... which are readily accessed by anyone then you get what you deserve. Never put anything on the internet that you're not prepared to be used against you at a later date.

No, I think if you put your views and opinions out on the internet, its fair game for anyone to come through and look at it. Its unreasonable to expect privacy when you post your life story on Facebook.

it's not a violation, as facebook is pretty much a public forum if you show up in facebook's search.

also more groups should check political views since i'm sick of getting right-leaning ads when I'm pretty far left.
