Is your baby on Losec for their reflux?

Sorry it's long!

My 3 month old has been on Losec suspension for a while now and it took a while and a very high dose, but we saw improvement. At one point I noticed she was really improving (I could lie her on her back or tummy for a play if she hadn't just eaten). She has always slept very badly during the day and likes to doze on a pillow on my lap at home. I can't put her down to sleep! Anyway, she always slept well at night (went to bed easily and usually only woke once for a feed) and was occasionally having a decent sleep during the day, but she is now not sleeping in the day and is waking twice a night and taking 1.5hrs-3hrs to settle off to bed. Waking twice doesn't seem too bad, but it is usually another 1.5hrs before I can get her back to bed so it is really not a lot of sleep. She seems to either still be in some pain or remember it because she still gets very upset when I go to put her on her back, but she also hates to be put down full stop. Does anyone have a child that is like this? I have developed tendonitis in my hands and problems with my shoulders because she needs to be carried. I do have a carrier (Baby Bjorn) and I often put her in that if I am up and about, but I can't sit down with her in it and she hates a sling.

My questions are;

1. Does your baby have bad reflux and take Losec?

2. If so what is your experience and when did it improve for you?

3. Did you investigate a milk protein allergy? ( I am breastfeeding and topping up with formula due to supply issues).

4. I am thinking of buying a swing. Have they helped your baby? Is it worth the money?

Sorry it is long. It's been a stressful week and I have been sick with gastro, so it has been a little harder to cope with. Thank you for your time!

Update:

Thank you for the responses so far. Where are you? I know I spoke to my pharmacist (Australia) and Losec is actually consideredmore effective medication for reflux although some start with zantac. It has helped tremendously (she screamed when she was awake the whole time before this). Unfortunately she is on a really high dose so medication-wise there doesn't seem much scope to move. I am surprised they haven't checked her for allergy, so I am going to ask them to at my next appointment.

I'm sorry for what you are going through....my 17 week old has silent reflux, but he is on Zantac. I don't know what it is, but my baby is doing(did) the exact same thing as your little one.....he never slept well during the day, but pretty much slept through the night.....but at 3 months, he kept waking up throughout the night, and still does not sleep well throughout the day. He is still not sleeping much and it is taking a toll on me. It is also taking a toll on my marriage because I am tending to this fussy, tired baby all day, I keep falling behind on cleaning my house, the only thing that manages to stay clean is my kitchen because I stay up late cleaning it, and as soon as I hit my head on that pillow, which is sometimes between 12:30 and 1:00 in the morning, the baby wakes up and have to struggle to put him back to sleep.....Most nights my schedule goes like this, put baby in bed at 11:00(he falls asleep in my arms and I have to make sure he is in a very deep sleep before I put him in his bed or he will wake up immediately when I put him in his bed......he wakes up at 12:30a, I get him back down at 2:00, I fall asleep, he wakes up at 3:00a, I get him back to sleep until 4:30a, and then my husband gets up and gets ready for work...the baby usually stays awake then....I know my baby is overtired, so I try to make trips anywhere so that he will fall asleep in the car. It is a sad thing that I have to do, but I want my baby to sleep....when he is awake during the day, he seems like a healthy baby. I am going to the dr for his 4 month check up, and I hope she will be able to tellme anything.....as for the swing, if it is something you can afford to try, then absolutely try it.....I have a swing and he usually will only stay in it for about 5-10 minutes at a time.....maybe you can look on craigslist for a used one in good condition. Good luck...I could only imagine going through this will being sick myself.

EDIT: I just had a thought, could your little one be teething...because that is what I am starting to think about my little one...his hands are always in his mouth!

Sorry my response is long too...

My son who is 3 months has reflux. He's currently on Zantac and I honestly don't think it's helping. So he's going to a GI specialist later this month to see whats going on. He's been on 4 different formula's because he can't seem to tolerate anything. I had discussed with his pedi all the issues he was having with the formula's and we all suspect a milk protein allergy and recommended he stay on the Alimentum which has helped. What he was doing on all the formula was not sleeping thru the night, waking to eat 3 or 4 times. It would take forever to get him to fall asleep. He would scream after eating and nothing comforted him. An hour to 1.5 hours after eating 5 oz he would want more.

A swing has definatly been a helpful hand to my family so I would say it's worth the $- you may be able to find a nice used one at a consignment shop for a lot less money.

You have probably tried everything under the sun to help her out and make her feel better. If you've not tried gas drops I'd give them a shot, also you could try and switch the bottles your using. Good Luck,!

I don't know anything about it. But I do know when anyone especially a newborn starts to show a reaction to any medication, should be checked out right away. He could have developed an allergy towards it. I would talk to a doctor prior to giving him anymore. (from someone who had a serious allergic reaction when she was a baby to a medication). Drs. advice to me is that if the baby is under 3 months and you have any concerns medically, should see a doctor right away.

If you are a acid reflux (GERD) sufferer you can find useful information on this site http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=568

They teach a natural method about how to get rid of your acid reflux. It worked for me.

    I hope it helps
