Is it possible a light bulb could be alive?

Definition of life= something that grows, reproduces, and consumes food of some sort and gives of waste form doing so.

Here are my arguments. A seedless orange tree cannot reproduce. An amoeba doesn't grow it just takes in nourishment than divides when it has consumed enough. As for consuming food and giving off a waste product from doing so, the electricity is its food and the light it gives off is it's waste product.

Please give me you arguments either way>

Update:

humans don't adapt to their enviroment we adapt or enviroment to us. IE build homes to live in.

All living things are dependent on something to survive.

As for self healing it doesn't have to it dies the second it is injured.

It might be "live" but its not "alive"

The diffirence with a light bulb, is that WE humans put it in a socket. The bulb then "consumes" electricity, because of "human" input. A light bulb cant put itself in the bulb. Nor can the light bulb turn itself on, thus giving off its waste product.

Even though humans can help feed plants, they are perfectly capable of feeding themselves, and giving off a waste product without the interference of humans.

Also, a light bulb doesnt need nourishment. But, plants do. They consume food to help them grow, or to help them reproduce or stay alive. A light bulb simply consumes energy just for the need of humans. Im sure if a light bulb was alive, it would realise this say "stuff you, humans!" and walk away.

Plants are independent, but lightbulbs require human inteference for them able to consume energy and to realise light. Thus, lights are not alive. They arent dead either. Their just another man-made object.

Light bulbs don't grow or reproduce. No known life form lives off of electricity. Perhaps there is somewhere in this universe but until we find it, it is not included among life forms.

You can certainly say the light bulb is alive, but what problem are you solving? No one will understand your special definition of "life" and you will lose credibility among those around you. Save your weirdness for more important things.

It's not autonomous, adaptive, or able to heal itself. You might use the analogy of a tree being dependent on the ground and water much like electricity. But a tree can adapt and grow in a variety of environments.

No. Everything which is "alive" has an operating system; some instinct or Will or desire to live. Light bulbs are dead matter without any of this "life force" in them. Also light bulbs have zero sensory apparatus, which is fine because there is no operating system to process the data anyway.

Well the source of a light bulb is electricity and it is alive source. When the source of life dies the bulbs goes out and you then just replace it. Hope this helped you.

  • Wait a minute. YOU define what life is, then YOU tear down your own definition with examples of life that defy your own definition?

Clearly, either your definition of life is wrong, or your conclusion that a light bulb is alive is correct. This should be pretty easy to figure out for yourself.

Get back to me. I've got to go feed my pet light bulb now.

hummmm......................... I believe You may enjoy the argument, simply for the sake of agument alone.

But, electricity itself is alive and when a light bulb is turned on, wala life. As for waste product, it'll die become waste and then you replace it.(reproduction)
