Colon and abbrevation rule?

I want to write Dependent var, as in Dependent variable, followed by a colon.

Should I therefore write

Depedent var.:? the period to indicate the contraction, followed by the colon?

or does dependent var: make sense because the dot in the colon includes the contraction?

Write as: " Dependent var.; ". All contraction words have to have the period; eg: Dr. for Doctor, Jr. for Junior, regardless of what comes after (in your case, a semi-colon).
