hydraulic lifter ticking in engine?

I've recently installed a used engine in my 96 Satrun SL.

When I started it for the first time it fired right up but there is a ticking sound (I only allow the it to run a couple of minutes).

I believe this to be the hydraulic lifters.

I'm guessing the engine sat for a while waiting to be sold and the lifters might be lacking oil.

How long does it take to fill them?

Is there a way to prime them?

The oil pump pressurizes a small hole in the side of the lifter which removes the lash. You've got a stuck hydraulic lifter. Try one or the other of these cheap things first.

#1. At the next oil drain interval substitute one quart of 5W-30 for a quart of Rislone. Rislone is a high detergent oil additive. Use Mobil 7000, Havoline, Brad Penn or Valvoline to fill the crankcase the rest of the way up.

#2. The next time you change the oil go for 5W-30 Mobil1 or Valvoline full synthetic. Both have an extra dose of very high detergent additives to hopefully clean and un-stick the ticking lifter.

#3. If that doesn't do it replace the lifter.

A ticking lifter can many times be the end results of varnish build-up interior the Hydraulic lifter itself. Klee Flo # seven hundred works very sturdy for cleansing this varnish out and letting the lifter alter the clearance back to spec, Many different manufacturers of chemical do an identical element - Seafoam is likewise one that could try this.
