Has anyone else gotten a virus from Facebook?
What can I do about it? Is there some free/cheap software to help me now and prevent any further problems?
I was not clear enough. It was not Facebook itself, but a message purported to be from a Facebook friend to my email which had the virus. It would not open, but I guess the virus got me anyway. I know the message has been sent to many on Facebook.

If facebook we're to spread a virus to peoples computer, it would most likely be on the news. Unless you download anything from another user on facebook you will not get a virus from facebook.
You can get viruses through your internet connection and IP address, and if you are using windows I strongly suggest getting a firewall and virus scanner.
Download.com has some free protection software. I recommend Eset Smart Security or Nod32 for antivrus/firewall.

Join Facebook Security, they give you warnings. At the moment Fan Check application is causing huge problems and you should not use this application. Facebook itself is not causing virus problems but the applications that go through Facebook can create havoc. Facebook itself has a list of malware downloads. These messages from "friends" are rife, if it carries a link, dont open it. Message your friend asking if they sent it or not, if its a no then delete it and tell them to scan their computer as they will be infected and unwittingly infecting others.

You can't "get a virus" from Facebook, unless you're downloading files from people, in which case, there's the same risk as any other downloads.
