How do i get my dog to stop pulling?

I have a german short hair pointer that is about 15 or so weeks old.

She isnt to bad on the leash.. But enough to make me extremely pissed off.

She likes to tug to the side, and sometimes in front. she will not look foward after seeing another dog and there going in a different direction.

I just can NOT stand taking her for walks. And im gunna be in track soon so i wanted her to be my running dog. but there is no way in hell im taking something thats pulling me in every direction.

She is in puppy lessons but as only been to two so far.. They did tell us what your suppose to do when they pull which is stop until they relex and go again. yea i tried that. i had to stop every three seconds because as soon as we would start walking again she would start pulling.

She is being walked right next to my side like they told us.

but if any one has any other ideas on how to get her to stop please share!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Often a harness does not help with control, often it can have the reverse effect. If you use a short lead you will have greater control and get something like a "Gentle Lead" head collar which will also help. This will not choke your dog. A short lead on it's own together with a walking stick stops the dog from pulling. The bottom of the stick is placed under the dogs chin when it pulls and this stops the dog pulling. Unfortunately you may feel a bit daft carrying a walking stick.

I personally don't reccomend a choke chain. They're for dogs who ocasionally pull ahaid, which your dog doesn't do. He'll just end up pulling on the chain and choking himself.

Buy a Gentle Leader Head Collar or Sense-ation harness. Only if he doesn't start walking right, though. He's still only a puppy.

The head collar goes around the nose, and the Sense-ation harness goes in front of the chest. They both work very well, but I prefer Sese-ation, because your dog will easily ajust to it.

Nice answer Jenna That is what i was going to suggest also. Yes choke chains work very well.

A common way is to get a special collar, a choke chain, semi choke chain, pronged collar.

With these collars it is uncomfortable for them to pull. When they start to pull you STOP and then wait for them to realize your not moving unless they stop pulling. WALK then if they pull again STOP and just repeat until she learns.

I actually am a vet tech down here in murfreesboro i got 2 more years left of school before i am a vet and i can honestly say a choke chain in no way is ever going to hurt the dog except if they pull way to much all the time, it will make the hair start to fall out around the bottom of their neck ( like a carpet burn in a human ) and that is all. It does not strangle your dog and will not break their neck like these random people that just think way too much about things state. I would like someone to go to google and give me a link to cases where a dog was strangled by a choke chain when it pulled too hard.

You people must also be the ones who think the swine flu is a really bad virus that is going to be worse than the regular flu. Which is wrong. The swine flu actually is going to kill less people than the regular flu, and so far the vaccinations from the swine flu have killed MORE people than the swine flu itself has. It just spreads faster because its a new strain, it is by no way a "worse or more deadly flu" This is coming from my mother who is a doctor at stanford medical center up in norcal, which is by far better than socal is!

to get you dog to stop you pulling you need a choke chain. put the choke chain all the way to the top of the dogs neck. if you put it on the bottom the dog has a lot more power.

if the dog starts pulling korekt the dog by tugging the lech to the side. this will create an out of balance experience. always walk your dog next to you. NEVER let him be in front. if he is in front he is the pack leader.

if the dog is the pack leader you are going to be having a lot more problems with your dog.i recommend you go out and get be the pack leader by ceaser millam. it is a great book that will teach you how to be the pack leader. it will help you alot and will explain everything very well .

I would NEVER use a choke collar on a 15 week old dog. You are doing the right things and with time, she will absolutely get it.

I have been doing that exact same method with my Lab and trust, nothing is overnight. Persistence and consistency are key here.

Save the choke chain - it's dangerous for your dog at 15 weeks.

We use something called a Gentle Leader on our dog. It's a face harness that turns their head to the side when they pull. They learn really quick to stop pulling.

when she starts to pull on you turn and walk the other way don't say a word to her just turn around and go no pause then if she shoots past you again turn around again keep turning around until she is watching you then you should be able to get her to stop pulling on you i know this because i have trained hundreds of dags and this is the trick i used for pulling dogs

I don't know your views on training aides, but how about a choke chain? As long as you use them correctly they will work. You can eventually quit using them once the dog is easier to walk.

get a head halter, gentle leader.

yes training to walk takes time and practice.
