the proper time to pick prickly pears?
I've a great big prickly pear cactus in my backyard, and it produces quite a bit of fruit. A friend of mine has threatened to make prickly pear jelly if I can bring her enough fruit. When is the best time to pick said fruit?

Any suggestions as to the best way to pick those fruits withOUT a hand full of needles?
To be clear, I'm asking for instructions on harvesting the pears, such as how and when; not information on how prepare them. Thanks!
