i can't delete a favorite?
from control panel, i click favorites, scroll to organize favorites then all i get is a big white box with a red X in the top... what gives?

Why go to the control panel, you can use the favorites menu option from IE. Although anyone using the internet should not be using IE, it is full of security issues. Switch to Firefox instead. Much more secure, faster, and their addon's are awesome.

It sounds like a bug infection to me. Run scans for virus, trojan and malware.
You can delete, rearrange, add your URL favorites, by using Windows Explorer. c:\documents and settings\YOUR ACCOUNT NAME\Favorites on windows XP or C:\Users\YOUR ACCOUNT NAME\Favorites in Vista.

Try going to your local user (C:\document and settings\username) and opening that folder. In there will be links to your favorites, try removing them this way.
