Do I need a contractors license to do pool and hot tub repairs?

I'm thinking of starting to do repairs for hit tubs and pools on the side while I attend college but I was wondering what would be needed for me to do them legally and also protect me and the customer. I'm in northern california. I have read that you don't need a license if the job was under $500 and most are, but what if they are higher? I have 5 plus years in the trade and worked under my companies contractors license. Also, do I need a buisness license, insurance......??? I'm just planning on keeping this small. Maybe a couple service calls a weeks.

I really don't know California law, but the state I live in (NC) only requires a general contractor to be licensed by the state. You have to pass a written test to get one. However, many local jurisdictions will require you to purchase a business license to do work in their area. These are a fundraiser for the town and don't require license testing.Call the county or city building dept where you live and ask.

  • OK NC does not require any licensing for hot tub or swimming pool repair! It does require a license for the installation of the hot tubs electrical work but that is where it ends for a hot tub. Unfortunately since that would eliminate all the fly by nights. Most of the state of California is actively requiring a limited license for electrical repair for hot tubs and swimming pools ans even a plumbing in some cases. You will need a business license of course in most areas which is always cheap. Next make sure you have Insurance which is most likely going to have to be through Lloyds of London since your new to the biz. Join the APSP for accreditation (just for your sake and it's ability to get more customers over your competition.) and it's great training programs. I bet you do this a lot more then part time once you realize what money is involved just in hot tub repair alone! Most of your jobs will not be slightly under $500. (60%) Good luck!
