why do conservatives make such a big deal about the liberals forming a coalition?

when that's exactly how harper got in the first time. he had a coalition w/the bloc & became prime minister. has everyone forgotten? it's pretty common in canadian politics. many years ago when the ndp were in power the cons & libs made a coalition together to get rid of them.

Update:

sorry i didn't mention that i am talking about canadian politics.

Update 2:

Update 3:

The Bloc was actually formed out of Brian Mulroney's Conservative Government back in early 1990's by Lucien Bouchard. Bouchard was a Conservative who broke with party lines after the failed Meech Lake Accord.

And why does the PC party make a big deal out of a Liberal coalition? It is because a politicians only job is to get elected. That is it. End of story. So if the Liberals form a coalition, call for a Motion of no confidence and oust Harper's regime - then there will be a few people that won't have a cozy job anymore. And Harper will loose face and power.

The reason behind that kind of opposition to the coalition takes its roots in the fact that the party currently called "Conservative" is actually a renamed Reform Party.

In the 1980s, the PC party, under Mulroney, had a very pro-Quebec stance. They tried two times to set up an arrangement to make Quebec ratify the Constitution. Because of that, Western Canadians, many of whom hate Quebecers, couldn't tolerate that their party had become too tolerant towards them, so they started their hate group disguised as a political party: the Reform Party.

Realizing that they couldn't get any significant support from the more moderate province of Ontario, the Reform Party renamed itself as the Canadian alliance. That didn't work.

Finally, with the PC near death, Peter Mackay accepted to disband and merge it with the CA, giving birth to the Conservative party.

So today's Tories are those who left the PC in the late 1980s because it was too tolerant towards Quebecers. While I agree with those parties of a lot of issues (I'm myself quite conservative), today's Conservative party is, among other things, an anti-Quebec hate group.

As any coalition would involve the Bloc in some way, the Tories/Reform don't want Quebecers to have any significiant place in the governance of this country. Also, because they get very little support in Quebec, they have nothing to lose in using anti-Quebec rethoric.

While opposition to the coalition is for sure also driven by a politician's desire to remain in power (that's why they are in politics), I'm pretty sure a Liberal-NDP only coalition would be much more accepted. Or if Quebec were separate, opposition to such a coalition would be much less fiery.

I think Canadians are sick of these coalitions if the Lib`s really want to get back into power they need new leader and a set agenda .

The Liberal party must decide if they are the Liberal party or a branch of NDP .

Both NDP & Liberal party lack leadership , the Liberal party has gone down hill since they forced out Chretien and NDP has not been strong since Broadbent.

For some of you that commented he is talking about Canadian politics in his question.

Good Question! I think the way it has always been is that Liberals are all about individual freedom, making changes, and trying new things. Conservatives are the "straight and narrows" my government professor said to me, and I believe that to be quite true, they oppose anything new or that may alter the grounded beliefs they have, so forming any coalition by the liberals is probably seen as a threat to the conservatives and their beliefs/values.

It's only fair since whenever conservatives form a coalition liberals brand it as a white power rally.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

What about a link with some more info.

If liberals had a coalition to clean up the corruption in Washington, that would be pretty nice.

I hadn't heard about a coalition so I don't know of anyone making a big deal out of it

who wants the liberals in power anyway and what is Gilles duceppe doing in parliament as he wants to break up the country, and besides if it wasnt for the English in Quebec, the quebecers would now be living in a ghetto, so you have the English to thank for keeping you in canada where you can keep the rest of the country hostage to your demands.

    Usually it's "Unions".

Like the "Soviet Union", a socialistic state.
