Basically the king sat at the top of the heap and handed land to those below him, they in return gave military service. The land owners below the king gave land to those below them and received military service in return. This went all the way down the line to the lowest ranks of society. The military service offered was members of the "fyrd", the temporary army called up at time of war. Most high ranking landowners were perminant members of the fyrd taking the role of modern officers.

his got his dukes and they have their own men so now there's a bunch of people fighting for him. Also since his a king he would hire men-at-arms and knights to protect him.
