There is a strange insect eating my purple sandcherry?

I have never seen anything like this insect before.....it looks like a tapole, or a leech and it is destroying my purple sandcherry. Does anyone have an idea what it is? It is literally a little black worm and it looks just like a tadpole. (or leech) It is about half an inch long and its 'head' is bigger than it's body. It is nasty looking....what can I spray to kill it before it kills my shrub? Heeeeelp!

Update:

Nope...not an armyworm,,,,the ones on my shrub are solid black and look exactly like a tadpole...they are shiny looking like they are wet and slimy even. They aren't snails or slugs either.

Update 2:

It was already dark out when I posted the question...I will take a pic and add it tomorrow! I have never seen a bug like this before! It's creepy!

Update 3:

Thanks guys.... I kept researching until I found out what it was.....it is a pear slug /sawfly larvae!

here's a link..... aren't they creepy looking?
