New 2009 Nissan Versa.....very unforgiving on rough roads?

Ok, I have had my versa for 6 months now, and still love it. Only issue I do have with it is it is VERY unforgiving with going across rough roads....probably not an issue in most places, but I live in a city that the roads are not going to get any better.....most roads are rough, potholes are everywhere, man hole covers are often sunk just as bad as pot holes....plus there are many places there are brick roads....some not in the best of shape (I actually started taking another route all together to avoid one that is on route i would normally take otherwise).

So, just wondering if, when I would have the money to do so, is there anything I can do that will improve this? Better shocks or something? Or is there really nothing I can do to improve this with this car? Also if there is anything i can do, how much would it likely cost me?

Update:

This is not a traction issue......traction is just fine.

Update 2:

I got the Versa because I like small cars. I was mainly between the Versa, the Honda Fit and the Hyundai Accent in cars I was interested in. So no, I am not looking to "ditch the small car." Really this is the only issue I have with the car and it is not that huge of an issue, I was just looking to see if there was anything I could do to improve it. I just cringe sometimes when I hit rough patches of road.

If you let air out of the tires you will completely ruin your fuel economy.. dont do that!

Sorry but your factory springs/shocks are going to be softer than any of the aftermarket springs/shocks. When you buy higher quality springs/shocks they are stiffer to improve handling.. which means the ride quality gets worse.

The versa is a cheap car that is light weight and it rides on skinny tires.. ride quality isnt going to be great.

The only think I can think of is to find some wider wheels and tires. The stock wheel size is 15 X 5.5 and you dont want taller wheels, you want them to be wider. If you can find some wider wheels.. like some that are 6.5 or 7.5 inches wide and put some wider tires on them that might help cushion the ride a bit. It will probably lower your fuel economy slightly.. but that is a sacrafice you will have to make.

The only other adivce I can give you is to ditch the small car. Get somthing like a maxima and it will give you a much more appealing ride.

Perhaps letting some of the air out of the tires may work, as they suggest that you do when you drive in snow. Not make them flat but you don't want them completely full. You may also try changing the tires on your car. On the norm when you purchase cars even though they may have a name brand tire on them like a "firestone" doesn't mean that it's top of the line. I'm not saying go out and by top dollar tires but upgrade them. Go to a tire shop like a Town Fair or something and ask them. As far as changing the shocks or struts you want to be careful in doing so because if your car is still under warranty you're limited to what you can do to the car without voiding out your warranty.
