Laptop shuts down when I try to do disc cleanup / defrag?

P.S I have a Toshiba Satellite with Windows XP and it is a Pentium 4.

Update:

Ok not sure I'm using the correct terminology here! When I try and make space on my laptop / clean it up etc, it starts to do it then just shuts down after a couple of minutes. So I can never do it! I go control panel > performance and maintenance > free up space on your hard disc. Any other ways I can tidy up my storage and give my computer a clean up? Thanks

Defrag needs room on the drive to run.If it's nearly full it can't

    Run Ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

If you have actually filled your drive then

go add/remove programs in the control panel see if you can uninstall a program that you don't use anymore or one you can reinstall easily to make enough room for defrag.

Ensure its not a heat issue. Run malware scans as well. For defrag try using Diskeeper09. It works even with other programs running and if the free space is less than 15%. Just set it on the automatic mode. Here is a free 30 day trial

clean the vents, put a laptop cooling pad on the bottom of the laptop, make sure that the power management settings aren't set to shut down after so many minutes of not being used. also make sure that is not running on battery and is plugged in to a power outlet

Clean the ventilation grids with compressed air, from a can, and or vacum cleaner. most likelly its a thermal shut down.

You must have it on the charger when you do this tasks!

Bad battery might also be the reason, check contacts.

that's a enormously basic concern with partitioned drives: domicile windows particularly would not like partitions, exceptionally while they're achieved with 0.33 social gathering utilities, and boot supervisor utility is put in. there could be a fix, yet stable success searching for one! For destiny reference, merely use 2 drives - domicile windows & partitions do merely unlike one yet another - I particularly have lots of problems with Dell & HP machines, that's via fact they use a restoration partition.
