How hard is it to fit a new CPU fan?

My current fan is far too loud and I want to install a quieter one but I'm not really sure how to go about it. Does anyone have any advice? Can I just buy any fan and have it clip on or do I have to find a fan which was specifically made for my processor? Is it a job that someone with a bit of knowledge (I'd classify myself as a mid level user) can do or would I have to get in a professional?

I have an AMD X2 Duel Core 5600+ Processor running at 3Ghz by the way if that's important...

There are many different types of CPU fans. Personally i have found it is sometimes easier to just replace the whole thing. I would recommend switching from the Stock CPU cooler to the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 I have one on my Phenom II 940 overclocked to 3.675Ghz. It is Whisper quiet...Wonderful cooler. Oh yeah...and it will fit the AM2/AM2+ Socket type...

It is not too hard, you just need to take the fan off, no need to remove the actual CPU and make sure you buy a cooler fan that is designed to fit the AMD X2 socket, it should say so on a box, me personally i go on Ebay for those kinds of things.

So it is not to hard just make sure you get the right size socket and obvisouly have enough space in your computer.

    Hope this helps.
