How do you get rid of a stain if you don't know what kind of stain it is?

I have several shirts that have stains on them that are foreign to me.

I just douse tops with any food stains on them in shout or spray n wash before they get tossed in the hamper. If they're really bad stains and don't come out in the wash, then I dab a small amnt. of the detergent directly on to the stain while the shirt is still wet out of the washer and rub it in with and old toothbrush to get it out. Most stains have potential to be gotten out as long as you don't dry the article of clothing while the stain is still on it.

Grease stains I get out with a small amnt. of Dawn dish soap and a toothbrush. Works every time.

Oh my gosh I thought I was the only person in the world with this silly mystery! Does it look like an oil spot, usually on the front of your shirts.Always on the ones that are mostly or 100% cotton, and medium to dark colours? That's what mine were and after much experimentation I tried strait vinegar on it followed by applying full strength laundry soap on the spot, then strait into the wash on very warm or hot (if you dare do it to colours) and it worked pretty well. I think it is oil that regular washing doesn't dissolve. Vinegar cuts grease. That's what gave me the idea. Hope it works for you too if you have these stains!
