Can I use buttercream frosting with fondant decorations?

I'm making my little sister her bday cake and I was wondering if I could frost the cake with buttercream and then use fondant stripes (for zebra print) and stick it onto the cake that way? Because fondant really tastes horrible.

I don't think the fondant would stick to the buttercream. You'd be better off decorating it with different colored buttercream frosting, I'd think.

I did a buttercream frosted cake with fondant decorations for my daughters' birthday and it was quite cute. It was actually a Wilton cake from Course III, but I used buttercream as the base instead of fondant. (I used a homemade marshmallow fondant - the premade stuff is too icky!) I made flowers from fondant, and piped the leaves and stems with buttercream.

I used piping gel to make them stick. You can also wet them with vanilla extract or even corn syrup.

The cake looked quite nice, and tasty. People assumed I ordered it from a bakery.

You can, but it would look better if you frost the cake and then cover it with striped fondant. The way to get enough frosting is to split the cake and put the butter cream in between the slices and then a slight layer on the outside of the cake to hold the patterned fondant. You're right, store bought fondant is not the most tasty, but roll it thin enough or make your own and people don't mind eating around it.

If it is the wilton fondant I will totally agree with you, if however you are making your own fondant then I would suggest using a recipe that I love by the thecookduke.com it tastes great, and is fairly simple to make. If you are going to use the wilton fondant then yes you can use buttercream it will hold the fondant to the cake.

The great thing about rolled fondant is that it can be cut into any shape and is easy to color outrageously. If you dust cookie cutters w/ powered sugar and then use tube icing you can achieve pro results in little time. And, are you using the marshmallow fondant? What's not to like? I add vanilla and other extracts to mine - lemon, butter rum, spearmint, etc.

And what's all this won't stick crap - you're not launching the cake into space are you?

you can do this by using either a little bit of water on the back of the fondant decor and press on to the cake for a couple of seconds or you can make some royal icing and put a tiny dot on the back of the decoration and apply that way. good luck!

Just pipe them on then smooth out with a frosting spatula or the flat side of a butter knife dipped in water.

    I Hate fondant too.

***To the "religious" follower or Extreme Cakes....butter cream is traditionaly used under pretty much All fondant to get it to stick to the cake.

Yes - but if your buttercream has crusted over it will be difficult to get it to stick well.
