Confusing Issue Regarding Hybrid and Mix Breed Wolves?

Hi.. i'm not interested in owning a wolf, but i have noticed that, on a certain television show, people said they have "hybrid" wolves.

A hybrid wolf is supposed to be a wolf/dog mix, but these people claim a hybrid wolf is two different types of wolves bred together (such as a Timber wolf and an Arctic wolf, for example).

I would think that, by breeding two different types of wolves together, you'd have a mutt wolf, or mix breed wolf, not a hybrid.

So, my question is, would interbreeding two types of wolves together produce a hybrid, or is this just another example of people making up their own definition of a word (in this case "hybrid").

thanks. i'm confused.

Update:

Hi Rogue - your dictionary defines hybrid as "an animal or plant resulting from a cross between two different types of animal or plant".

Since dogs and wolves are two different TYPES of animals, then i would assume breeding the two would result in a hybrid (again, according to your dictionary.)

Thank you for all the answers, folks. Just as i suspected, humans are making up their own definition of the word HYBRID, and twisting it all around.

Perhaps some of this confusion is about illiteracy?

There is some dissent over whether a wolf/dog mix should be called a hybrid since they are of the same species.

Mutts are mutts - mixing breeds or types of wolves or dogs makes mutts.

A hybrid wolf certainly is a dog x wolf mix. Perhaps they're just so into wolves they've claimed their own definition of a hybrid.

hybrid is two different species, dog and wolf, lion and tiger, horse and zebra. Breeding two different classifications within a species(like two types of cats dogs or wolves, gets you a mixed breed.

a hybrid is made by crossing two different species of animal. therefore, breeding two different types of wolf would result in a mixed wolf. breeding a dog and a wolf would result in a hybrid.

People in the dog section say its has to be to different species, however the this is the definition:

Genetics The offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock, especially the offspring produced by breeding plants or animals of different varieties, species, or races.

    shttp://www.thefreedictionary.com/hybrid

That being said to be a "hybrid" it could be a different race (breed) species (dog/wolf) or varieties (colors). So I don't know why everyone thinks it has to be a different species. By the definition it could be either right way?

Does someone what to explain it to me?

a hybrid is simply a domesticated canine [dog] bred with a wild canine [wolf]...

breeding two different species of wolf, i would ASSUME it would just be a Wolf but bred with two different species. I wouldn't know since i've never heard anything of a Hybrid two species wolf.
