What is running cross country for a high school team like?
I want to know how often you practice, how long are the practices and what do you do during each practice? How often do you compete and what are the competitions like (how far do you run, stuff like that)?

I ran XC for three years of high school, one of those years I was on varsity. After my first year we switched head coaches, which altered slightly the types of practices we had but mostly nothing really changed. We started out with semi-optional summer conditioning in June which was offered 6 days a week, and during those we would do four days of distance or time running, one day of hills and one day of intervals. After the practices became mandatory in early August, our practices became more structured and we had them 4/5 (depending on if there was a race or not) days a week: 3 days a week we would have distance running (with two of those days including stations of ab workouts and weights), and one day of hills, and two days of fast intervals or repeats. Each practice, including warmup and stretching, was about 2 - 2.5 hours long. And races were 5k or 3.1 miles, and we ran about once or twice a week for maybe 6 or 7 weeks? Meets were usually on Saturday mornings and 1 afternoon during the week, and they were a ton of fun! Most likely youll get to the meet, warmup, stretch, then wait until your race, run, and then wait around for the induv and team awards, but mainly what youll do during meets depends on your team. I loved cross country, and I hope you do too! good luck!

Hi there, I am a cross country athlete currently. and we usually have practices monday - friday. excluding the days we have meets ofcourse which we usually have a dual meet or tri meet [race against on or two other schools] once a week typically Wednesdays. but my coach is all about getting more experience in and we tend to do one invitational a week. usually they are on fridays or saturdays. in high school cross country the distance is a 5k which is 3.1 miles. or 5000 meters. practices are usually an hour to an hour and a half. we usually go for days when we go for a nice 4 ish mile run you wont usually do speed work untill you get some mileage built up! HOPE I HELPED :]

i currently run for my high school in northeastern nj ..i run 6 days a week..between 7-13 miles a day.less the day b4 a meet, and meets u still run a lot because of a warm-up and cool down (meets usually once or twice a week, most saturdays),..on my team we have a hill or speed workout once a week. all i have to say is xc is kickass..i'm a senior and its my first year doing it...and about 90 percent of xc teams have pasta dinners b4 meets, which is amazing...finally, just don't worry how bad u r because i started at the beginning of the season doing 3 a day cause i plain sucked and the other day i did 13.......so all i can say is....just do it

2 mile warmup
monday-long distance day (8 for medium group, 10 miles for varsity)
tuesday-easy 30 minutes minimum
wednesday-Hill day, around 4-5 miles mostly uphill (hardest day for most)
thursday-easy, slow short run
Friday-hard speed drills, 3 individual times miles, 12 400's 6 800's or something around that with a cool down after.
we race once or twice a week, usually with a meet on saturday.
