Cost to take small dog on flight from Hawaii to mainland using Hawaiian Airlines?

How much is it to take a small dog ( less than 25lbs.. chihuahua or dachshund size) from Oahu to the mainland on Hawaiian Airlines as carry-on? Also, does this deduct from your allowable carryons, leaving you one besides the pet? If so, does this take from your large or your small carry-on.

Thanks for any info! I would like to find this out before I decide to get a dog because I want to make sure I can afford to take the dog when I visit the mainland.

Update:

I will not be taking the pet back to Hawaii. I will be moving to the states in a few years to be closer to my family again. I am just hoping to get information from someone who may have done this recently. I have looked on the Hawaiian airlines website and prefer not to deal with customer service of companies and was just hoping to get some info, as I said, from someone who recently did this.

Thanks for all of your effort to help me so far, everyone. I appreciate it

See site below for info...and you will need to CALL them for the fee. Your pet needs to be in a carrier that fits under the seat...the pet carrier is not one of your carry-on" bags..it is a separate item.

    Look at this site:

    http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/info

Scroll down to where it says Hawaii Resident Pets -- that is the part that will pertain to you.

As you probably already know, Hawaii is rabies-free. Your pet will have to meet certain requirements in order to be allowed back into the state of Hawaii. Sounds like a lot of trouble and expense to me. Why not just have someone pet-sit for you while you're gone?

ETA: "Moving back to the states?" Are you kidding me? Hawaii IS a state! If you live here you should know that we call the upper 48 'the mainland.' LOLOLOLOL

Your best bet is to contact the airlines directly. That way you know the facts positively.
