I answered a similar question a few weeks ago that should help give an idea.
People create cultures as a way to feel accepted while also signifying that they are different from other 'groups.' I'll use Asian cultures as an example. We have Asian people in America. But there's a difference between those who are Asian (born in Asian) vs. Asian American (born/raised in America), so they determined that these are different cultures. Within Asian American, there is Japanese, Chinese, and Korean Americans, and also Filipino American, Pacific Islanders, and Hawaiians.
To break down Hawaiians, there are those who are genetically Native Hawaiian, Hawaiin but only partially, not genetically Hawaiian, but was born/raised in Hawaii, and those who do not fall in any of those categories.
By trying to signify that you are different from the majority is ultimately creating a new culture within the more broader culture that you were originally from. It fits with the saying that we are all different and the same at the same time.

A street gang would be an example of a subculture. A true street gang has its own rules, rituals, and customs. They have connections with an underground society that the general public could not even begin to comprehend. They have their own sense of justice. They are a culture within a culture, that's why they are considered a subculture.
