Killer Magnet of Death?

Can You really wipe a computer memory and make it it useless or at least unrecoverable by passing a magnet over the memory board? If so, how big a magnet would you need. I have my reasons for asking.

Passing a magnet over a memory board will have no effect on your data but running a magnet over your hard disc drive might mess up the data on it.

Depending on how much damage is done it could still be recovered however.
