Should a company send flowers to a funeral for the death of an employee's immediate family member?

Company has 300-400 employees. Over the years, many employees have had deaths in the family; parents, siblings, grandparents, children and spouses... the company does not send cards or flowers. Sometimes the other employees will put money together to buy an arrangement or send a card... it seems as if other companies do this to show respect to the valued employees and their families. Do you think this is true or are we out of line to think this ought to be done? We have an employee in our department who's mother passed away and the wake/funeral are tomorrow and the next day... there has been some argument about what should be done.

In a smaller company yes, they would send a card. I worked in a small company before (around 60 people) and they would send cards out. Also, the deceased will be mentioned along with which employee was affected in the monthly company meeting.

Of course, that's not the same in all companies. Bigger companies don't really have the time to micromanage the private affairs of their employees considering HR (who usually deal with these issues) is busy managing the 300-400 employees among other tasks.

From what I have seen, if the employee who has suffered a loss is from your department (example: Accounting) then those folks who work at the Acct dept should get a card and send it together...atleast that shows some courtesy to your fellow collegue. Afterall, any death will be felt for years.

A lot of this depends on business ethics. A company does not need to do this and all this depends on the views of the management and the managers involved who make the big decisions. If they make it official, they will have to do for all cases.

For example, if I were the CEO, I would make it official policy to do so. It shows the employer cares about the employees and makes the workplace a more positive environment.
